Oh well, in five years time we could be walking round a zoo
With the sun shining down over me and you
And there'll be love in the bodies of the elephants, too
I'll put my hand over your eyes but you'll peek through

And there'll be sun, sun, sun all over our bodies
And sun, sun, sun all down our necks
And there'll be sun, sun, sun all over our faces
And sun, sun, sun, so what the heck

'Cause I'll be laughing at all your silly little jokes
And we'll be laughing about how we used to smoke
All those stupid little cigarettes and drink stupid wine
'Cause its what we needed to have a good time

But it was fun, fun, fun when we were drinking
It was fun, fun, fun when we were drunk
And it was fun, fun, fun when we were laughing
It was fun, fun, fun, oh, it was fun

Oh well, I look at you and say it's the happiest that I've ever been
And I'll say I no longer feel I have to be James Dean
And she'll say, yeah well, I feel pretty a happy too
And I'm always pretty happy when I'm just kicking back with you

And it'll be love, love, love all through our bodies
And love, love, love all through our minds
And it'll be love, love, love all over her face
And love, love, love all over mine

And though admittedly all these moments are just in my head
I'll be thinking bout them as I'm lying in bed
And I know that admittedly it might not even come true
But in my mind I'm havin' a pretty good time with you

Oh, in five years time I might not know you
In five years time we might not speak
Oh, in five years time we might not get along
In five years time you might just prove me wrong

Oh, there'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love, love, love wherever you go

There'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love, love, love wherever you go
There'll be love

Im certain this song isnt optimistic at all. Most of noah and the whales songs arent. Seeing as it says "In 5 years time we could..." at the beginning shows this is all just in his imagination. It seems to be about him and one of his good friends who he is in love with. Its all in future and conditional tense and at the end when it says "you might just prove me wrong", i see this as not being optimistic but instead its saying that she might prove his him wrong in thinking that they could ever be together.

I do love this song though, I think the fact that it does sound happy and has the pessimistic undertones is the beauty of it (:

i think this song is happy all the way through, i think it's about how he really likes a person, and just hopes and dreams that in the future they will be together and happy. i love how optimistic it all is, even at the end when he admits that maybe none of it will ever happen, it's like it doesn't really matter because 'there'll be love love love wherever you go' ; so even if they're not together and happy, this person is still amazing anyway.

i'm listening to this song, thinking this song is so lovely, i just wish i could feel this in love with the person i think about all the time. the song then starts to make me sad because i am not with that person and then...

BAM...maybe all these moments are just in my head!

    just gorgeous!

i am always pretty happy when i am just kicking back with you*

Maybe I'm a born optimist 9which I'm not) or maybe it's because I'm desperately in love and sent this song to my boyfriend only this morning, but I read the "in my head" bit totally different as he still says "you might prove me wrong", as in she will show him that it isn't all in his head and in 5 years all of this will be true. Like I said, maybe I'm an optimist

I think this should become a 'romantics anthem' something that everyone truely in love can relate to. really beautiful song, with beautiful lyrics =]

I don't think it's pessimistic at all. As much as I don't want to be "omg it's sooo good i love it" because I think there's a deeper meaning, i think it's mostly optimistic. Or at least realistic. Cause like, yeah, maybe the people you love now won't be the same later on, but everyone changes and relationships are always fluid. But the good part about that is, there WILL always be someone that you can listen to this song with and be in love. :) Also, this expresses optimism about whatever current relationship it's about...that it's strong enough to last for five years. I think the things he "imagines" did actually happen, but he's been separated from his love, and he knows that they WILL meet again.

If you like this song, you might want to check out "Some Things Last a Long Time" by Beach House....

    Song Meaning

Well throughout the song he is describing all the good things that could happen to them in the future, and how amazing life could be, in five years time. In the fourth verse, he makes it clear that he does not think any of this is going to happen, but even though it's all "in his head" he is still thinking about the life that they could have. The next chorus is him saying that even if they do not know each other in the future, she will still go on to have a brilliant life, full of "love". The final line before the last chorus "You might just prove me wrong" is saying that maybe it will all happen, and there's a slight chance that he might be proved wrong in his prediction that it really is only fantasy. So when people say oh it's optimistic or it's pessimistic, it's neither. He has accepted that he will probably never live all these moments, and he's accepted that, and is perfectly happy just to live in the dream of his own mind.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
