I can see the lifeless, I can feel the darkness under you
I can see behind me
I can try to hide it but without a will to see the truth
I can feel a heartbeat slowing to nothing
Why don’t I go when I know there’s nothing I should want here?
Why do I stay when I know there’s nothing I should say?
As I stand behind you, lost in all the things that I would do
Never really with you, quietly halfway in the room
Do you see behind you, do you see behind you?

Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when I know there’s nothing I should want here?
Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when there’s nothing you can see?
Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when I know there’s nothing I should say?
Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when I know there’s nothing for me here?

How I see you now is all wrong
With my hands full and it’s all wrong
And I shouldn’t have looked ‘cause now I can’t look away

Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when I know there’s nothing I should want here?
Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when there’s nothing you can see?
Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when I know there’s nothing I should say?
Why don’t I go tell me why do I stay when I know there’s nothing for me here?

this song is so...... ......... ......... true. it's about wanting someone so bad but not being able to tell them, but knowing that they aren't for you and that nothing good will come of this

i can try to hide it, but without a will to see the truth try to hide your emotions when your just clouding them right

why don't i go when i know theres nothing i should want here whomever it is that she wants she knows is no good for her.

as i stand behind you lost in all the things that i would do standing behind him day dreaming about all the things that she wants to do.... you know

never really with you, qietly half way in the room shes never really there because she is lost in what she would do versus what she has the balls to do

how i see you no is all wrong, with my hands full and it's all wrong, and i shouldn't have looked cause now i can't look away. her vision has been clouded because of all of the things that she wants him to be, but he's none of them.

or am i all wrong here?

i think your idea is going in the right direction... but imo it's about being in a bad relationship that has drained you in some way and slowly questioning is this really the right thing for you.

I think weakness is right. It's definitely about a relationship. It's about knowing something that your partner has done secretly and going through the denial of it all. She can see how lifeless the relationship has become and it's because of something her lover has done. Possibly she literally was "quietly half way in the room" when she caught him and he couldn't "see behind him" to find her watching. When she says she can see behind herself, she means that she can see through her feeble attempts of denying what happened or her postulated and persistent belief that he still loves her and realizes that it is all just an attempt to preserve her relationship and that it's easier to keep it inside than speak it and face the pain of the truth. Now all she can do is question herself about what to do (stay or go) and daydream about all the things she could do (confront him, stay, go, remain silent, seek revenge, etc).

I personally think this is about her brother, and her being always in her brother’s shadow as he’s a very famous voice actor and she may feel hidden away behind him. Explaining the ‘as I stand behind you’ line :)

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
