"Lifeline" as written by and Ben Harper....
One time to know that it's real
One time to know how it feels
That's all
One call - your voice on the phone
One place - a moment alone
That's all
What do you see?
What do you know?
What are the signs?
What do I do?
Just follow your lifelines through
What do you hate?
What do I do?
What do you say?
Don't throw your lifelines away
Don't throw your lifelines away
One time - just once in my life
One time- to know it can happen twice
One shot of a clear blue sky
One look - I see no reasons why you can't
One chance to be back
To the point where everything starts
Once chance to keep it together
Things fall apart
Once I make us believe it's true
What do we see?
Where do we go?
What are the signs?
How do we grow?
By letting your lifelines show
What if we do? What up to now?
What do you say?
How do I know?
Don't let your lifeline go
Don't let your lifeline go
Don't let your lifeline go

General CommentI think its about being in a relationship that is getting serious and he doesn't really want it too. He wants out, he doesn't really want to spend his entire life being unhappy just to make the other person happy. That might be wrong though, it's just a guess and I didn't really do any research

General CommentNot sure if you based this on a live cut, but the album version has some differently arranged lyrics:

    ==========

Life is much too short to sit and wonder
Who's gonna make the next move
And will slowly pull you under
When you've always got something to prove

    I don't want to wait a lifetime
    Yours or mine
    Yours or mine
Can't you see me reaching for the lifeline
    Your lifeline
    Your lifeline
    Your lifeline
    The lifeline

You say that I misheard you
    But I think you misspoke
I hear you laugh so loudly
While I patiently await the joke

    I don't want to wait a lifetime
    Not yours
    Not mine
Can't you see me reaching for the lifeline
    The lifeline
    The lifeline
    Your lifeline
    Your lifeline

It's a crime with only victims
We're all laid out in a row
    And it's hardest to listen
To what we already should know

I could hold out for a lifetime
    Yours or mine
    Yours and mine
Can't you see me reaching for your lifeline
    Your lifeline
    Your lifeline
    The lifeline
    The lifeline
    Your lifeline
    Your life
    Your life

General CommentTwo people are in love with one another but are clearly at odds and drifting apart. Each is waiting on the other to extend a hand. But the author feels like he's doing his best and reaching out but it doesn't appear the other is reaching back. And the fact neither are doing so is killing him. There has been a disagreement and she has said something hurtful which she is trying to take back. He has been hurt, and finds nothing humorous about the situation at all. He seems desperate in his attempt to have his partner reach out to him. He feels like it's a crime for a love like this to die, and each are hurting each other equally by their actions. But he feels they are meant to be together and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. They are one anothers lifeline...
