"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
When can't get up to the cold morning light
But you don't get to sleep in, still dreaming
And everybody only wants to fight
You're up against never being right
When the worries of the world hold your feet
And there's little left to believe in
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Old pale memories of someone you knew
Keep crawling through the back of your mind
Still in time
And in the daylight you're crossing all your wires
You just never knew how to put out a fire
And the closet's been shaken with bones
Little reminders that you're out on your own
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Today, today, keep your head and drive again
There's nothing more to battle
And you go
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
But you don't get to sleep in, still dreaming
And everybody only wants to fight
You're up against never being right
When the worries of the world hold your feet
And there's little left to believe in
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Old pale memories of someone you knew
Keep crawling through the back of your mind
Still in time
And in the daylight you're crossing all your wires
You just never knew how to put out a fire
And the closet's been shaken with bones
Little reminders that you're out on your own
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
Today, today, keep your head and drive again
There's nothing more to battle
And you go
Today, today, is gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong
There's nothing more to take in
Going wrong

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
'Ow ow ow' is something i could say about pretty much every Stars song.
"Keep crawling through the back of your mind Stealing time And in the daylight you're crossing all your wires You just never knew how to put out a fire"
...Ow ow ow.
this song is amazing. and i know how this feels. it's good to hear it being said out loud.
I love this song; Amy sounds amazing and it's so optimistic, which is what makes Stars so inspiring. I think she actually says, "Keep your head and drop your gun."
they way i interpret this song is something like:
"today will be better cos so much bad stuff has happened to me already that theres nothing worse that can happen anymore"
or is that too negative? hahaha
thiiiiiiiis is an awesome song. One of the best from IOBATW. I love. Meaning is simple.
the style of this song reminds me of Sing-Sing. great stuff.
I love the quote at the beginning "the only problem with going to bed, is you have to wake up in the morning" that with the background rift is beautiful. Amy sounds like perfection as always, and although the song isn't too deep, it brings a surge of hope every time you hear her croon "today, today, is gonna be a better one".
I agree witj kmb187.
Keep your head and drop the/your gun" makes a lot more sense.
does anyone know where the quote at the beginning is from? or who's voice it is?
love this song.
Ahh, one of my favorite of Stars' newer songs. It's so positive -- even though life really sucks sometimes, the only thing you can do sometimes is look forward and keep trying to hang on. And/or that life is so crappy right now that it can only get better.
