The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I was always late
You, never afraid
That we could be falling
All our friends would say
That maybe we should wait
But they can't see what's coming
And to this day
When everything breaks
You are the anchor that holds me
And that is why we'll always make it
How I know your face
All the ways you move
You come in, I can read you
You're my favourite book
All the things you say
The way you shift your eyes
I never knew there was someone to make me come alive
When the days are long
And the thunder with the storm
Can always get me crying
Well you can make my bed
I'll fall into it
Shadowed but not lonely
'Cause I never knew home
Until I found your hands
And when I'm weathered
You come to me, you're my best friend
And that is why we'll always make it
How I know your face
All the ways you move
You come in, I can read you
You're my favourite book
All the things you say
The way you shift your eyes
I never knew there was someone to make me come alive
And when we're making love
I give everything up for your touch
How I know your face
All the ways you move
You come in, I can read you
You're my favourite book
All the things you say
The way you shift your eyes
I never knew there was someone to make me come alive
And when you go to work
All the day I wait
For you to come home
Recount our time
In our little place
Our little place
Our little place
Our little place
Our little place
Our little place
You, never afraid
That we could be falling
All our friends would say
That maybe we should wait
But they can't see what's coming
And to this day
When everything breaks
You are the anchor that holds me
And that is why we'll always make it

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think this song is about getting married, or deciding to.
"all our friends would say that maybe we should wait but they can't see what's coming"
It's about how perfect they are for each other how they're always there for each other and stuff, basically a love song, but I think the first verse gives it more of a story/meaning.
This songs definately addictive. It's very sweet. I get the vibe that its someone, whos in love, telling the story of how she wants to spend her life with her someone, and shes positive it'll work and that they're perfect for each other and so she's waiting for the day that'll come.
we're using this song as our recessional for our wedding in october :)

When you know your lover inside and out as if they were your favorite book. And no matter how much life may push you about; when you are together you will always have your little place of solace.
I'll always love you Angela. -Suketu
Very unStarslike but still a very pretty song.
I'm pretty sure it's "Shattered, but not lonely." I think the song is pretty straightforward, being about love and feeling secure and comfortable with someone who really knows you; there's not a lot to read into.
it's definitely "shattered" instead of "shadowed"
i love this song. its very different for them, but the lyrics are just perfect.
i love this song, it's great. and it's definitly shattered, and not shadowed
