"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Georgia, I swear I never seen such a smile
Gorgeous enough to make an angel's heart run wild
Your lazy eyes and small-town lies
Have got me in your spell
Your drive-in boys and back-seat noise
And oh, you learned so well
Oh, oh, oh, so how was I to know
You got me, you got me right now
Georgia, your daddy was high the night he dreamed up you
Georgia, the stars were flyin' the night that you came through
Christmas in your eyes
Oh, what a nice surprise
Oh, oh, oh, and now I miss you so
But baby, I'm comin' back to you
Georgia, we will be together, dear
If they ever let me out of here
They will say that it's not true
But I did it all for you
Georgia, won't you tell them for me, dear?
Georgia, girl I never lived through a night like that
Sure enough got your lovin' where I like it at
Moonlight through the pines
Oh, oh, oh, but how were we to know
That wasn't moonlight, they were searchlights, oh no
Georgia, we will be together, dear
If they ever let me out of here
They will say that it's not true
But I did it all for you
Georgia, won't you tell them for me, dear?
Georgia, we will be together dear
Oh, my dear
If they ever let me out of here
Gorgeous enough to make an angel's heart run wild
Your lazy eyes and small-town lies
Have got me in your spell
Your drive-in boys and back-seat noise
And oh, you learned so well
Oh, oh, oh, so how was I to know

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Seems like the song is about a man spending a night with an underage girl, then getting sent to jail for it.
Spot on. I've listened to this song many times and it's never clicked, but I think you might be right.
That's what I think too. A guy was lied to by a young girl about her age and he was too spellbound by her beauty to question it. Now he's waiting to be let out so he can get back together with her. Hopefully she will be of age when he does.
Right, the sarchlights, if they ever let me out of here.....very cool song
@RogerClyne "I did it all for you." What is jail-baity about that? Absolutely zero to indicate that.
No no no where is any indication in the lyrics it’s jailbait? None. Not everything has to be weird and dark. This a terrific song about wanting to be back with a Georgia girl he loves and he’s in jail. Its filled with wonderful Southern touches. Boz is as upstanding a guy as there is. I like the Chicago-like trombone part, and how the great backing band would go on to be Toto. Well done Boz.
Probably a robbery. Remember the lyric is “Theyll tell you its not true but i did it all for you”. NOT did it to you.
this is one of his best, that's why i had to add it
I just realized that this song is about jail bait. Man. The 70s were a strange time.
@Yinky Based on what? "I did it all for you." Clearly did something for her; underage sex doesn't fit.
I'm not sure he's in jail for jail bait but he's definitely in jail! I think he did a robbery to get money for the two of them, i.e., "I did it all for you." Great song!
@valjeang

I agree. Could be he snuck into her house to see her and the dad had him arrested for trespassing or attempted burglary.

Even if she is under 18, nothing says the boy is not also.

The fact it mentions the biological father as her origin, tells us he is close by and part of the story.

Teenage love was a bigger theme in Rock from the 50s to 70s....Jack & Diane, Teen Angel, etc
@valjeang

agree- I think he did a crime, perhaps a robbery like you say to help them both and it was not a crime related to sex. I thought so at first but your idea makes more sense. I've also heard the opinion (but don't think so) that it is from the point of view of an abusive fathr who wants to get back with her.
Georgia - A beautiful young girl who is being sexually abused by her father and then later by town boys. Her life becomes a myriad of promiscuous sex. Boz writes from the point of view of the man who is in love with her (perhaps a father figure) who kills the father to stop the abuse.
My humble interpretation
Well I was dating this guy twice my age. This song kind of bothered me when I heard him listen to it when he visited me. I shared it with my brother and it kind of bothered as well. I am 30 soon to be 31 he’s 55 with three kids and three grandkids and his daughter is pretty much my age and it just is not right. And the problem is I’m not in love with him. He’s completely obsessed with me and we all can see meaning my family that is due to my age and that is obvious. this song really gives me the chills it’s kind of creepy if you will. I made the right move. He sees it as some kind of an Unforbidden romance and he likes also listen to Dusty Springfield son of a preacher man and he’s not even religious he’s just creepy like that and I think I got out at the right time that’s all I have to say. He’s just not right in that way. The obsession was just completely over the top.
@Stephaniejones He's 55. "Son of a Preacher Man" is a song of his youth. "Georgia" is clearly about a guy doing something for the woman he loved - some have mentioned murder in retaliation for her being abused, robbery so they could go away together. Nothing creepy, nothing to indicate obsession, nothing to indicate she's younger. "He's completely obsessed with me," lol. Narcissist much?

The song "Georgia" has a somewhat darker meaning, revolving around a person's infatuation with a mysterious and captivating individual named Georgia. The lyrics suggest that Georgia's charm is so powerful that it mesmerizes the narrator, as indicated by phrases like "lazy eyes and small town lies" and "backseat noises." The reference to Georgia's father being high when he dreamed of her and the line "Moonlight through the pines, but how were we to know that wasn't moonlight, they were searchlights, oh no" adds a hint of uncertainty and darkness to the narrative.
Furthermore, the mention of the narrator being confined and needing to be let out reinforces the idea that something troubling may have occurred, potentially involving illegal or dangerous actions. Despite the consequences, the narrator claims to have done everything for Georgia and expresses a desire to be together again.
The song's dark meaning lies in the exploration of infatuation, the allure of danger, and the consequences that come with it. It hints at a complicated and possibly problematic relationship with underlying themes of obsession and the potential for destructive behavior.
