When you find me in the morning
Hanging on a warning
Oh, the joke is on you

You said you were pretending
Heres to one happy ending
Oh, the joke is on you

To make sure yesterday doesn’t repeat
I took a shortcut home
A left on the street I know
They wont find me here

I found out how to make mama proud
be real quiet, dont talk too loud
I tried, I tried to disappear

My life is for the taking
Break down is awaking me
I’m ending all this pain

When you find me in the morning
Hanging on a warning
Oh, the joke is on you

You said you were pretending
Here’s to one happy ending
Oh, the joke is on you

This is my last day, should’ve been my first kiss
I think to myself “will I ever be missed?”
I hope… or maybe I don’t care

I where my team around my neck
I love em so much, gonna love em to death tonight
I see the world through my eyes

My life is for the taking
Break down is erasing me
I’m ending all this pain

When you find me in the morning
Hanging on a warning
Oh, the joke is on you

My big escape
Is my biggest mistake
I think you better turn around
Don’t throw it away today (today)

When you find me in the morning
Hanging on a warning
Oh, the joke is on you

You said you were pretending
Heres to one happy ending
Oh, the joke is on you
The joke is on you
The joke is on you
The joke is on you
The joke is on you

My InterpretationWhen you find me in the morning
    Hanging on a warning
Oh, the joke is on you
He is going to hang himself, and make sure his antagonizers find him.

    You said you were pretending
    Heres to one happy ending
Oh, the joke is on you
Happy ending reminds me of fairy tales or love stories, so obviously a girl was part of the reason he hung himself. She didnt really love him, either dated him on a dare, or cheated etc.

To make sure yesterday doesnt repeat
    I took a shortcut home
A left on the street I know
    They wont find me here
He was home another way to avoid bullies in this verse.

I found out how to make mama proud
be real quiet, dont talk too loud
I tried, I tried to disappear
His mother didn't really love him, which is why she would be the one who finds him

My life is for the taking
    Break down is awaking me
    Im ending all this pain
His life means nothing, so he just wants to stop hurting.

This is my last day, shouldve been my first kiss
I think to myself will I ever be missed?
I hope or maybe I dont care
This confirms the girl theory. He also wonders if anybody will care that hes gone, but then realizes he doesn't care, they deserve the pain.

I where my team around my neck
I love em so much, gonna love em to death tonight
I see the world through my eyes
He uses his favorite sports team scarf to hang himself, theyre the only thing that means anything to him.

    My big escape
    Is my biggest mistake
I think you better turn around
Dont throw it away today (today)
He realizes suicide might not be right, maybe he should keep living

When you find me in the morning
    Hanging on a warning
Oh, the joke is on you
Repeating this shows that even though he regretted it, he still went through with it. We don't know if he is thinking this as he is hanging or in the next life though.

    You said you were pretending
    Heres to one happy ending
Oh, the joke is on you
    The joke is on you
    The joke is on you
    The joke is on you
    The joke is on you
Now everyone should regret all the pranks they played on him, all the times they made fun of him, all the times they laughed at him, because now they know its all their fault he died. They now have to live with that regret for the rest of their lives. Heres to one happy ending is his morbid way of reminding you that he doesnt get one, and he just inhibited your chances of having one.

General Commentmy veiws have changed about this song now that i read this:

Wade explores more diverse songwriting topics this time around, putting himself into other characters in songs like “The Joke,” with its syncopated world beat, inspired by a newspaper article detailing the story of a British boy who hung himself after being bullied by schoolmates. Jason puts himself into the subject’s shoes, with lyrics that could be right out of a suicide note: “When you find me in the morning/Hanging on a warning.”

General CommentIt's prolly a suicide note, that bullying story you said makes plenty sense to me...I have my 2 cents here though:

    "You said you were pretending
    Heres to one happy ending
Oh, the joke is on you "

Was that possibly this person's last friend that backstabbed them leaving them with no one to rely on, and that'd be why this suicide happened?

That spot is the only questioning part of the song, anyway good interpretationl.

General Commenti think the phrase may actually be

    "You said you were pretending
    Heres to unhappy endings
Oh, the joke is on you "

thats what it sounds like and that makes more sense, its def about suicide i think although i dont know who's, its a different writing style for jason isnt it? this album isnt out in Australia yet so im yet to hear the other songs :S

General Commentcoleclark is right, that's what the lyrics sheet on the cd cover says. this song is amazing, i've heard a rumor or two it's based off this kid who commited suicide in canada or somewhere. when i listened to it at first, i definitely loved the instrumentals&vocals. it was reassuring to see they were sticking with their whole rock thing still. once i heard the story behind the lyrics it made it all the better. god, i love when he does the whole screaming thing. it's not as great live for this particular song though.

General Commentany reason for that outburst cruci? grow up

i wanna know where this huge vocal range of his has come from! previously songs like 'take me away' have sounded like the limit of jasons range but these new songs have blown that out of the water, its good, but im confused as to why he hasnt stretched like this before? maybe the strained sound didnt fit in with the sound of the older songs?

General CommentI dissagree with vivalainfu. I loved the live version. It was my favorite of thier whole set and I had never even heard it before.

As for the meaning it makes so much more sense with the suicide thing now. I'll add a few things to the story and see what you guys think.

To me this sounds like a boy killed himself over a girl who was acting like she liked him, but it was a joke that her friends put her up to. That would explian what "The Joke" is because his suicide obviously is no joke. So now he's saying to the girl "The jokes on you because your joke is what made me kill myself".

The reason I decided it's over a girl is because of the line "should have been my first kiss". Someone earlier said he lost his last friend, but if he was trying to kiss his friend then that freind left for a good reason!

A few more things. I figured out the line about "wearing his team to death" means he used his favorite sports team's shirt to hang himself.

Lastly, is "My big escape is my last mistake. You better turn around. Don't throw it away tonight" means that in his last moments he regretted hanging himself. He realizes that he overeacted and should have taken more time to think about it.

General CommentYes. The lyrics are "unhappy ending."

I totally agree with the suicide idea of the song. I mean, once I started listening to it, I came to the same conclusion.

What gave it away for me though was the "hanging on a warning." I then started listening closely to the rest of the lyrics and it all lead to suicide.

I agree it has to do something with a couple. Let's say for the man's perspective. I see it more as, he loved her, but something went wrong and he found out she didnt love him. The "pretending" can be seen as she was cheating on him.

Good thinking mrm! I was questioning that part, but that could make sense about the whole team thing.

Then there's the whole "breakdown is awaking" then "breakdown is erasing" part. I think here, he finds out and is 'awakened' by this knowledge. Then though, the knowledge 'erases' him.

The whole joke thing is obviously to get back at someone who hurt him. In the end though, the "joke" is actually a very serious suicide.

Or, here's where I differ, I think he could have possibly gone another route.

The whole "big escape" verse leads me to think that maybe, he did turn back and didnt kill himself. But, in his mind he plays out the scene and the "joke" he played.
