"Halloweenhead" as written by and Ryan Adams....
Here comes that shit again
I got a Halloween head
Head full of tricks and treats
It leads me through the nighttime streets
Black cats and fallen trees
Under ladders, always walkin'
Salt shaker spills, just throw it over your shoulder, babe

I got a bad idea again
I got a Halloweenhead
Halloweenhead

Head full of candy bags
costume shops and punks in drag
Head full of tricks and treats
Places where junkies meet
And it leads me through the streets at night
That's alright I just watch, I don't go inside
It's all the same old shit again
I got a Halloweenhead
I got a Halloweenhead
Lord, I got a Halloween head

Guitar solo!

I got a Halloweenhead
Lord, I got a Halloweenhead
I got a Halloweenhead
Oh Lord, I got a Halloweenhead

Here comes that shit again
I got a Halloweenhead
Head full of tricks and treats
It leads me through the nighttime streets
Downtown, downtown, downtown

I got a Halloweenhead
I got a Halloweenhead
Lord, I got a Halloweenhead
What the fuck's wrong with me?
God, I'm a Halloween head

General CommentThe definition of a Halloween Head from one of Ryan's entries on his website:

    1. HalloweenHead.
A fan of The Cardinals music. stoner. outcast. someone who doesn't know what kind of mood they are in. Not sponsored by Bud Lite or collecting girls or guys numbers during a quiet breakdown. usually are laid back and engage in mellow conversation with band members when seen in arcades or getting food. Don't ask for shit when people are eating. not gravity challenged but reality challenged. also known as Bed-Heads, or Chandler Bings."

General CommentMan, his voice has never sounded better. RA & the Cardinals' version of Mr. Brownstone (that is meant as a big compliment).

General Commenti think it means he may look scary, or live in a bad part of town, but there is no real danger and he's sick of people judging him to be a bad person. Like in halloween when kids dress up as scary stuff, but they're just children.

General CommentHalloween Head ... He's frightened? He's scary? He's dark?

    Tricks/treats = drugs.

Talk of the ladder and salt is basically saying he's bad news (ie bad luck), a curse to who he comes across.

General Commentit's about all the "shit" that goes round and round in your head...even the good things like poems and nonexistent conversations...you want to do stuff that will make it stop or at least change. negative=tricks; positive=treats.
he quit doing drugs but he's interested in the darker scenes he's always been interested in ("it's alright--I just watch I don't go inside")...the imagery of black cats etc. is the stuff he sees on his late-nite walkabouts when he can't sleep but can't do drugs/alcohol.
Even after going for a long walk, he can't get his head to stop... "what the fuck's wrong with me?"

General CommentI would have to agree with moonpainter. I interpret this song from someone who deals with elevated anxiety, who has thoughts they cant control that echo thru your head. "Here comes that shit again" is the uncontrolable thoughts that race thru your head in a situation. A jack-o-lantern has a glowing head when lit. If you've ever experienced high anxiety that's exactly what it feels like....inflamed or glowing feeling in your mind that is so hard to turn off. Thats how I read it. The "highs" can be like treats, but the mind can lead you into "tricks" or bad places that may feel good at the time, but utimately hurt you or fuck you up.

Song MeaningThis song is about me.

Thoughts going through my head that I can't understand, emotions that I don't care for... f'ed up. Here comes that shit again. So I go out on walks, wander through the streets and parks super duper late at night. It only takes a couple blocks and I'm away from my fancy upscale downtown apartment to the places where junkies meet. They're nice people, but our superficial conversations usually end once they find out I'm not interested in purchasing drugs or sex from them. I just watch, I don't go inside.

Then I smoke a shitload of tricks and treats and just wander around. There's this black cat who wears a little bell that I usually meet up with. The first time we meet, he went out of his way to cross my path. I'd stop, he'd stop. I'd adjust my pace, he'd adjust his pace, so that he'd cross right in front of me. I called him a jerk, but whatever -- just throw it over your shoulder. Since then, we've been friends.

What the fuck's wrong with me? I'm a Halloween head.
