"Sooner Surrender" as written by Mark Weinberg and Matt / Nathanson....
In the party love,
Some band's playing hallelujah
Hallelujah
In the corner love
All night girls drink wine and try to sing along
I made a mess of things
The stops and in betweens
They weigh me down
You got someone new singing you your songs now

[Chorus]
Sooner surrender
Then watch the last wall collapse
And sooner surrender
And our love will count for everything

In my sweetest dreams
It's just you and me
And we break wide
I wake reminded love
How I just gave up
And how you moved on, how you moved on

I'm waiting for something
I've waited for now
For the rolling canyons of love
And I'm tongue tied
And you're coming alive, coming alive

[Chorus]

I'm sorry that you've gone
So sorry that you've gone
I'm sorry that you've gone
Love
I'm sorry that you've gone
So sorry that you've gone away
You're a little bit right
More than a little bit right
With my arms around you

[Chorus]

Sooner surrender
Than watch the last wall collapse I know
Sooner surrender and our love will count for everything
Our love will count for everything
And I miss when you were everything

General CommentI previously said: "I think saying he'd sooner surrender means he'd rather give up and not be there when the final piece of them falls. He feels it's inevitable and doesn't want to see that finality." But now I that I hear the song more, it can also be the totaly opposite. He could be saying he'd rather surrender to his feeling and try again with her before it's completely over and that last piece of them fades away.

General CommentThe questionable part is "break wide"

This song is so amazing, I don't understand how he says so many things with such grace.

Basically I think that this is a song about a guy that "just gave up" with a girl for reasons he can't justify anymore. The first part I think he's at a party or something that reminds him of her, like when they used to go out to parties and drink wine together, but now it weighs him down from all the memories because she's got someone new in her life to do what he couldn't do for her at the time.

He still sees her in his dreams, everything is perfect there but when he wakes up he sees the reality of what he's done, because she's not there anymore because she's "moved on".

He's asking her to surrender everything and tear down the walls they've built up around themselves and trust in the love that they had together, because that's what's gonna get them through it again.

    Man, I love the part:

"So sorry that you've gone away/
    You're a little bit right/
more than a little bit right/
    with my arms around you"

He sees that everything that he thought was right is now wrong without her...words so incredibly perfect.

General CommentIts about knowing that the one person you loved more than anyone else is now with someone else. Someone else is singing to them now and you miss everything.

General CommentBeautifully heart wrenching... if beauty and heartache can actually coexist.

General Commentthis is an amazing song. one of my favorites on his new album.
the questionable part sounds like "and we break," but that doesn't really make sense, so i'm not sure.

General CommentHe's at a social gathering, a lively place, but he's feels all alone. He's thinking about his ex and how she likely has moved on with someone else, someone who does her good.

General CommentI, too, think it could be taken either way. Due to my current situation, I'm taking it in the sense that the guy doesn't want the last piece to fall away, therefore he's backing away from it all to save what's left of their friendship... Even though he wants to be with her. And how she's most likely found some other guy, and even though he knows it was for the best, he can't do it.
Such a lovely song. I love the music, too.
