In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
In case it gets away from us
Don’t pull it close,
the damage revealed the cost
And it wasn’t worth it, but they’ll never know
To keep in mind the line that separates idols
If the world is a dream and nothing is worth it
Unless you have a god. (We’re all going to hell)
But we wont be saved we’ll live as slaves to love
What god takes away, let’s refill all your holes with mud
“Purchase your tickets; I’m kicking your crosses down”
And all the voices sound just like you
I’ll be there-
Breathe in-
It’s been so long (I’ve felt so wrong again)
I fixed myself up nice but you never came
The words rolled off our backs and sound the same
I’ll be waiting-
I hope that it’s worth it but I’ll never know

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Circa is really beginning to piss me off. I believe in God and blah blah blah, but it's really frustrating that every single band I love hates God. When I first started listening to Circa, I didn't notice the meaning of their music. But then I heard this song. This is particularly frustrating because people "open their eyes" to see that there is no God, but who are they to open their eyes? I "opened" my eyes and realized there WAS a God. It's all a matter of who's writing the lyrics, but it seems more often than not that they realize God isn't there.
And has anyone ever stopped to think that maybe God doesn't answer our prayers because we are being tested, or even better yet (this would be a great subject of a song) that we don't deserve his help. Maybe the injustice in the world is to show how much we've screwed up our world.
Will someone please write a cool song like Circa, but not make it about atheism OR religion? I want music untainted by religion, or lack thereof. It spoils the music either way.
Circa is not out there making music just for you. They're creating art - expression. I am not a Christian, but I still love and value music from mewithoutYou, Underoath, etc. because I appreciate their passion, their emotion and their art - even if I think their message is entirely incorrect.

Why do you believe in "God"? I ask this rhetorically, as I'm not here to convert you and I don't care to get into a deep philosophical conversation. I ask, because I find that many people ardently stand behind the religion their parents imposed on them without actually thinking about why they believe it.

You mention "God" vaguely enough that you could be Jewish, Muslim, etc. It doesn't really matter which, but for this example, I will assume that you are Christian. Simple question: If you were born in Pakistan, or Iran wouldn't you most likely be Muslim? If you were born in ancient Greece, wouldn't you pray to Zeus (and their hundreds of other "gods")? You are a product of your environment. The reigning religion in any area is that which has been accepted and supported by the local governing body.

If religion works for you, that's great. Stick to whatever you enjoy - whatever makes your days more fulfilling. I'll stick to science and empirical evidence in searching for the truth.
Holy.. maddrummermax, thankyou. You said everything i wanted to say and more.

My favorite argument: Omnipotence vs. free will.. God [Omnipotent] chooses everything for us and knows everything, from the beginning of time, until forever. So i didn't have the choice to not believe in him.. He chose it for me. Why would he condemn me to hell? Doesn't he love everyone? Hah. I'm going to stop. Just wanted to leave a thought.

Love this song. Don't give a fuck if Circa hates god or not, they're amazing regardless. :D
I left that comment a couple months ago, and on the week I come back to this to see if I get a reply, I did. I think that's sorta funny. A manifestation of our collective consciousness.

we are never deserving. God doesnt care about that. he loves us regardless. even those who dont open their eyes to see HIM! but i agree with you. circa is a little bitter but that is the reason to embrace them more. because us who believe know otherwise and cant be tainted.
@gibsonfenderepiphone I don't know. To me, this doesn't sound like God bashing. There are some really bad bands out there that really hate God and they tell about it.
@gibsonfenderepiphone "wahh wahh other people dont give in to my idiotic, outdated beliefs!" by the way, you cant hate god if you dont believe in him you stupid fuck.
@gibsonfenderepiphone Made an account 13 years late and just now to repond to this. You think he hates god? The whole thing is him wanting there to be a god but his mind gets in the way. Some of us can't worship a god because we are truly to nihilistic and not in suspended disbelief. He even says "I fixed myself up nice but you never came." He wants to ingest a god or anything at this point but his own mine won't allow it. You looked at the song title and assumed.
