"I Would Be Sad" as written by and Robert William Crawford Timothy Seth Avett....
I would be sad because you left me all alone
I would be sad because the lies that you had told
I would be sad because I got left by a girl that I adore
I would be sad because the love I had before

I meant what I said when I said I would settle down with you
Although I know it's not something that you were asking me to do
And I know we are young but we won't always be, so marry me
Let's not be that predictable young couple changing, moving on
But I can tell by watching you that theres no chance of pushing through
The odds are so against us; you know most young love it ends like this

I would be sad because you left me all alone
I would be sad because the lies that you had told
I would be sad because I got left by a girl that I adore
I would be sad for all the love I had before

I meant what I said when I said I would rearrange my plans and change for you
You know me, I've always been the kind with easy confidence
Confident enough to honestly believe that nothing out there stopping me
Especially not someone who's not loving me
Now listen here I told you I could live on with out loving you
I was bluffing then, but it seems that just might have been the truth
Well my dad told me, "One day son, this girl will think of what she's done
And hurting you will be the first of many more regrets to come."
And he said, "If she doesn't call, then it's her fault and it's her loss."
I say, "It's not that simple see, but then again it just may be."

I would be sad because you left me all alone
I would be sad for the lies that you had told
I would be sad because I got left by a girl that I adored
I would be sad for all the love I had before
I would be sad for all the love I had before

General CommentI just realized the reference to an earlier Avett's tune:

"I meant what I said when I said I would rearrange my plans and change for you"

in the song, If it's the Beaches, from the Gleam EP:

"I will rearrange my plans and change for you"

    how cool is that?

General CommentI always felt like the Beatles lyrics were simple and clean, to the point and conveyed the complexity of their emotions without becoming to evlevated.

For me, this song does exactly that.

    General CommentWhat a lovely tune.

Brigns me right back into the moment of my first proposal and the fallout.

    I had to try.

General CommentThe connection between the two songs showcases how involved the guys are with their music. It is personal. It is evocative. It is REAL. This song is so pretty and catchy. :]

General CommentThere's a connection between the 2 songs. When they sing "I meant what I said when I said I would rearrange my plans and change for you", we can ear a door closing (from the truck) Remember when they say in "If its the Beaches"...He promises her everything while he go "gas up the truck
Pack the old love letters up;We will read them when we forget why we left here".I think it is and its beautiful. OH and "You know me Ive always been the kind with easy confidence
Confident enough to honestly believe that nothing out there
Is stopping me especially not someone whos not loving me" Thats me! I feel the same.

General CommentI know this is a love song and, in a way, all love songs are very similar but it's refreshing to hear one of a different sort. This is the only song I've come across that describes exactly what happened in a chapter of my life and exactly how I felt about it all so perfectly. When I first listened to it I was talking to a friend while it was playing and when I heard the line "And I know we are young but we won't always be so marry me", I turned it up and started it over. I was just baffled to hear how perfectly it applied. Anyways, that's why I appreciate this song a lot.

General CommentContinuing the discussion about the relationship between I Would Be Sad and If It's The Beaches. These might be relation to other Avett Brothers songs as well. November Blue is about leaving a girl behind and it being a very hard separation. Denouncing November Blue is a follow up from that one and says "I left town she stayed behind, I said I'd call, she said she'd try. We lost touch the moment I drove off."
In I Would Be Sad, Scott sings "if she doesn't call, than its her fault, and its her loss."
    Just a thought.
