"Leaving for Paris" as written by and Rufus Wainwright....
I'm leaving for Paris
No, I don't think that I'll see you
I'm leaving for Paris
No, I don't think that I need to
So I'm leaving for Paris
Won't you try to take care of yourself?

I pray you won't follow through the crooked streets behind me
I pray you won't follow
Like so many who have known me
So I'm leaving for Paris
Don't you try to find out where I am
Just you try to take care of yourself

And when I get there
I'll lose the name you gave me
And when I get there
How happy I will then be
So I'm leaving for Paris
Won't you try to take care of yourself?
Just you try to take care of yourself
'Cause I'm leaving; yes, I'm leaving
'Cause I'm leaving; yes, I'm leaving for Paris
Goodbye

General CommentHe's tired of taking care of someone and decides to leave that person; however, the construction "pray you won't follow" seems out of proportion. Perhaps he suspects he won't be able to leave that person a second time; all the "others" who have known and followed him might have taken advantage of that, or he knows this lover in particular would be hard to forget unless he puts as much distance between them as possible. The lover did, after all, give him a ring - a sign of commitment if there ever was one.

The lyrics read like he's brutally dumping someone - but pay attention to the way he delivers them and you'll find a whole different story. Isn't he absolutely miserable when he signs "How happy I will then be"?

General CommentThis song was written for Nicole Kidman's character in Baz Luhram's Moulin Rouge for the end of the film, where she leaves. It's about how she's leaving because she has to, not because she wants to.
