"The Heinrich Maneuver" as written by and Daniel Kessler Samuel Fogarino....
How are things on the west coast?
I hear you're moving real fine
You wear those shoes like a dove
Now strut those shoes, we'll go roaming in the night

Well, how are things on the west coast?
You keep it moving to your soul's delight
Now I've tried the brakes
I tried, but you know it's a lonely ride

How are things the west coast?
Oh, I'd move Heaven behind those eyes

Today my heart swings
Yeah, today my heart swings
But I don't want to take your heart
And I don't want a piece of history
No, I don't want to read your thoughts anymore
My god
'Cause today my heart swings
Yeah, today my heart swings

How are things on the west coast?
Hear you're moving real fine tonight
You wear those shoes side-to-side
Ah, strut those shoes, we'll go roaming in the night
Well, how are things on the west coast?
Yeah, but you're an actress and I don't identify

Today my heart swings
Yeah, today my heart swings
Say it
But I don't want to play the part
And I don't want a taste of victory
No, I don't want to read your thoughts anymore
My God
'Cause today my heart swings
Yeah, today my heart swings

Say it
'Cause today my heart swings
Yeah, today my heart swings

Let it come
'Cause I've got a chance for a sweet, sane life
I said, I've got a dance, and you'll do just fine
Well, I've got a plan with forward in my eyes
Let it come
Well, I've got a chance for a sweet, sane life
I said, I've got a dance, it moves into the night
Well, I've got a plan with forward in my eyes

But today my heart swings

General CommentI believe the song could be a metaphor... about a guy who was crushed by a lover that distances themselves emotionally.

He hears from others that she is doing well. He is amazed how comfortably she has moved into her new "shoes." "Now strut those shoes" - go do your thing.

But as he says that his mind drifts to the past - "We'll go roaming in the night."

He quickly catches his thoughts with - "How are things on the west coast."

In the next verse he realizes that she is doing what she wants. He tried to keep hope alive for the future by - "I'v tried the brakes." But he couldn't handle the ride alone emotionally.

He catches his thoughts again with - "How are things on the West Coast."

Then his emotional peak of his love for her - "Oh and move heaven behind those eyes.."

But he realizes that it is over and that he needs to move on - "Today my heart swings"

The lyrics are straight forward until - "Yeah, but you're an actress I don't identify." This is where he he realizes that to change this much she must have been lying/acting with him. But how could she, I couldn't have been so foolish, she stole my heart!

"But I don't want to play the part" - I'm no longer playing your game. It is over.

I keeps running through his mind until - "Let it come." Which signifies the actual point that he stops thinking about moving forward and really does.

He lets go and takes control back of his life. He is moving forward - "Well I've got a plan, look forward in my eyes."

Great sound, universal meaning, love INTERPOL

General CommentI related to "Heimlich Manuever"-he tries to save someone ,he is trying to save the girl from a bad decition(leave him maybe, the boy wants a 2nd chance)

How are things on the West Coast?
I hear you're movin' real fine
You wear those shoes like a dove
    Now strut those shoes
We'll go roaming in the night------He knows how she been doing fine (rumors, news from friends, etc)

I've tried but you know it's a lonely ride--he CANT forget her-

    Today my heart swings
Yeah today my heart swings---he loves her----

Yeah, but you're an actress I don't identify--He thinks that the girl is liar, she misses him to,she is pretending that she doesn´t love him ( he thinks that)---

But I don't want to take your heart
And I don't want a piece of history
No I don't want to read your thoughts any more-----he want her,he doesn´t want only the mmemory of her,he wants her-----
    My God

    Let it come
'Cause I've got a chance for a sweet saint life
I said I've got a dance and you'll do just fine
Well I've got a plan, look forward in my eyes---this is what the girl actually feels, she doesn´t want him,SHE has a second chance for a saint life and the boy will be just fine....

Well I've got a plan, look forward in my eyes---if u look ar someones eye u know what the person feels,u know when soemone is lyning or teeling the true,so the girl is teeling-look at my eyes,I dont want to be with u,stop it!-

General CommentInterpol. Good every time. They are incapable of writing a truly horrible song.

The meaning, well...you have the female, the actress, living on the west coast, trying to make a name for herself and in the process begins to grow fake as she gets a little fame, but she still "tries" to be faithful to her best (perhaps?) friend who lives on the other side of the country who is in some kind of love or like with her, he hears about her from her mother or cousin or something like that, he even sends her gifts from time to time, then he visits saving up all his money to get a beat up car to travel to see her, he forces the gift on her which is something she must don outwardly so he can get that little "Look what I've done hrrh hrrh" feeling and wants everyone to see him with her, she doesn't seem to happy about it-but she likes his attention and probably tells him quixotic things she doesn't mean, but he's not fully buying it, but his heart wants to, but knows the truth nonetheless, and he finally realizes what has happened between them and how negative she has grown to be so he finally decides to do something for his nerdy ole self, and as she tries do that "no don't!" he asks for his own space to experience some gratification for himself instead of worrying about her needs, but of course he's still hurting, but from now on, he's going to keep on telling her that he's not going to be her lackey anymore.

    Run-On Sentence power.

General Commenteveryone always comes back to interpol. it's about being in love and the paranoia it induces. he still cares a lot about her, but whenever he starts to worry that she is cheating on him because she's far away, he wonders what it would be like to leave her - "today my heart swings". i think it's also a less obvious way of asking her to pick him over all the temptation she has.

oh my god, if this is an indication of things to come, this album is going to be awesome, i take back everything.

General CommentTo me the song is basically about a girl a guy once loved( an ex maybe) that is starting to temp him once again, even though the guy knows that the relationship is not worth it.

The lines "How are things on the West Coast" implies they have been seperated and they meet each other again as the speaker cant stop watching the girl dance

However he realizes the folly of being lured back into a relationship that had some problem. "Ive tried the brakes" but he acknowledges that ignoring her will be a "lonely ride." He has a chance for a "sweet saint life" that is being threatened by the renewed feelings he has for the girl. This conflict within himself is causing his "heart to swing"

And for the title of the song, my interpretation is that it is referring to a brutal type of "Heimlich Manuever"(Heinrich Himmler was leader of the SS in Nazi Germany). This is symbolic because he is trying to expel the girl that is causing a "lump in his throat" and choking him.

General Commentan old love of his from far away shows up. he still has feelings for her, and i guess might want to 'hook up'. he knows if she gets involved with his life, then he won't be able to live it the way he wants to.

"How are things on the West Coast?
I hear you movin' real fine
You wear those shoes like a dove
    Now strut those shoes
We'll go roaming in the night
Well how are things on the West Coast?"

he meets her, tells her she looks nice, asks if she wants to chill.

"You keep it movin' to your soul's delight
    Now I've tried the brakes
I've tried but you know it's a lonely ride
How are things on the West Coast?
Oh and move heaven behind those eyes..."

she just does what she wants to do and could ruin his life (which seems to be planned out), and he's given up on her before and knows it's lonely, and now he's thinking about putting her before his dreams for the future.

    "Today my heart swings
    Yeah, today my heart swings

But I don't want to take your heart
And I don't want a piece of history
No I don't want to read your thoughts anymore
    My God..."

his heart's swinging back in forth bewteen what he wants for himself in the future and what he wants at the moment (her).
he doesn't want her to fall in love with him.
he doesn't want a repeat of last time.
he doesn't want to be close to her anymore.

"Cause I've got a chance for a sweet saint life
I said I've got a dance and you'll do just fine
Well I've got a plan, look forward in my eyes"

he's got a chance to make his life exactly how he wants it, but he has a moment to be with her, cause what he wants is in the future.

    basically, exactly what electriceel01 said.

General CommentI really want to know why this song is titled what it is... hmm.

Everytime I've heard this song, I think of an Internet relationship. "How are things on the West Coast? I hear you're doing real fine..."

"You wear those shoes like a dove". She is very graceful. He admires her poise, the way she moves, her style.

He wants her, but he knows he can't pursue her... not only is she far away, but she is out of his league... he doesn't want to just be another guy (I don't want a piece of history)...

He has all these plans for them to be together and have a great time, but he knows how it would turn out... either she would turn him down completely because she is so much better than he is or he would end up being used or humiliated

He really has feelings for her, but he is having second thoughts (Today my heart swings) He knows the truth and part of him just wants to get away... so he doesn't want to read her thoughts anymore... because it would just make him realize the truth and he'd feel bad

General CommentAn idea on The Heinrich Maneuver...

obviously a play on words of the heimlich maneuver...

Heinrich Himmler was a powerful Nazi who was known for annihilating those he deemed unworthy. The guy in this song feels as the more he talks to this beautiful goddess of a woman, he feels more and more unworthy of himself. As she continues her life perfectly independent and stylish, he feels worthless to her, he feels like nothing, and every moment he speaks to her he feels those mixed feelings of loving her, but also feeling worth nothing to her.

The act of talking to her is the heinrich maneuver.

I'm sorry if that sounds completely inane, but it was the only thing I could come up with.

General Commentif you hear this song in a recovery-period of a break-up, the lyrics will make so much sense to you! it's about getting over the break-up and feeling fine again, I can feel it exactly:)

He is sick and tired of the relationship and glad that it ended. Think about it :)

General CommentI completely agree with electriceel01. This song really does reflect a past relationship or might-have-been relationship that never really developed to a place you would've wanted it to. And now that relationship is becoming appealing once more but you know it's not really worth it to have you heart broken like it was before.

I think it also may be speaking of a new, separate relationship that may be developing with someone else that has no real prior experience in love, and you're kind of inbetween on who you might want to settle for, the old flame or the new prospect?

Or maybe I'm just translating this into my own life too much and not enough into itself. :)
