"Man on the Silver mountain" as written by and Ronald Ronnie James Dio Richard Ritchie Blackmore....
I'm a wheel, I'm a wheel
I can roll, I can feel
And you can't stop me turning

'Cause I'm the sun, I'm the sun
I can move, I can run
But you'll never stop me burning

Come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain

I'm the day, I'm the day
I can show you the way
And look, I'm right beside you

I'm the night, I'm the night
I'm the dark and the light
With eyes that see inside you

Come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain

Come down with fire
And lift my spirit higher
Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again

Well, I can help you, you know I can

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain

Just look at me and listen
I'm the man, the man, give you my hand
I'm the man on the silver mountain

Come down with fire
And lift your spirit higher
I'm the man on the mountain
The man on the silver mountain
I'm the night, the light
The black and the white
The man on the silver mountain

General CommentThe "Silver Mountain" is the moon. The man in question is the man on the moon. The song's about astronauts.

General CommentThis song sounds to me like it is talking about the prophet Ezekiel in the Bible. Ezekiel chapter 1 explains the vision that he saw of the Cerubim (which are an illustration of preachers in Revelation) which came out of the "wheel within a wheel" (Im a wheel, Im a wheel) These creatured didnt turn withersoever they went (you cant stop me turnin). I think it is Ezekiel chapter 3 or 4 where they take Ezekiel by the hand and lead him to a high place to give him a broader perspective of the problems in Israel. That vision of Ezekiel was an illustration of personal revelation from God... which I believe the song is alluding to. Although Dio sang the song, you have to remember that Ritchie Blackmore wrote the song, so Dio's image has nothing to do with it.

Song Meaningto me, it's quite a simple meaning.. he's singing about being God or Jesus or what have you

"And you can't stop me turning", "But you'll never stop me burning" - eternal life

"Cause I'm the sun" - giver of life/the light

"Come down with fire" - smight the sinners

"Lift my spirit higher" - worship/praise me

"Someone's screaming my name" - people calling on him in time of need

"I'm the man on the silver mountain" - silver mountains being clouds = heaven

"I can show you the way" - path of religion

"With eyes that see inside you" - knows what you do/feel/think

    just my point of view.

General CommentThis song makes me want to run through the streets and plant a haymaker on the face of each person not wearing a Dio t-shirt. If they have the shirt, they better be able to tell me how much they think Dio rocks.

Song MeaningThe Man on the Silver Mtn is the Devil. Wake up.

    I'm a wheel, I'm a wheel
I can roll, I can feel
And you can't stop me turning

Cause I'm the sun, I'm the sun
I can move, I can run
But you'll never stop me burning

(Satan is the Angel of Light, fallen, but he keeps on going)

    Come down with fire
    Lift my spirit higher
    Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again

(Wants to be holy again, came down with fire (fell, like lightning)

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain

I'm the day, I'm the day
I can show you the way
And look, I'm right beside you

I'm the night, I'm the night
I'm the dark and the light
With eyes that see inside you

(Satan is darkness, but can still masquerade as the Angel of Light. He can show you "the way"...)

    Come down with fire
    Lift my spirit higher
    Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain

    Come down with fire
    And lift my spirit higher
    Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again

Well, I can help you, you know I can

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain

Just look at me and listen
I'm the man, the man, give you my hand
I'm the man on the silver mountain

    Come down with fire
    And lift your spirit higher
I'm the man on the mountain
The man on the silver mountain
    I'm the night, the light
    The black and the white
The man on the silver mountain

(Everything Dio sings about is vague and this is the way the Devil works, look at Dio's logo/name, turn it upside down, you can see "Devil" or "Evil" in it).

General CommentDio, Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore, often used Biblical imagery in song lyrics, but not in the same manner written in the Bible. I think jhardin has it right that Ezekiel was a basis for the songs imagry, but it's definitely not talking about the same thing.

Dio once made a comment in concert that this song was a reference to his past and some of those in the band. Just pure speculation on my part, but I'm guessing this is about getting high most likely from heroin and the man on the silver mountain is the pusher and/or the person once their high.

My InterpretationTo me, the man on the silver mountain is a guy who is a great leader. A great leader is the light and the dark, he knows when to show mercy and also when to kick someone's ass. He greatly values honesty and is very perceptive, he KNOWS when someone is lying to him and punishes accordingly, and he also KNOWS when someone is beaten down and needs a helping hand and he provides it.

A real life example is the character Bigfoot in Anthony Bourdain's book " Kitchen Confidential ". Here are some key passages from the chapter called Bigfoot, " Bigfoot understood - as I came to understand - that character is far more important than skills or employment history. Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don't. Bigfoot understood that there are two types of people in the world: those who do what they say they are going to do - and everyone else ".

That also reminds me of something i read about Navy Seals. If a Seal promises you that he will do something, then he will do it or die trying to do it. If you promise a Navy Seal that you will do something and then you just decide to forget it, well you probably won't live too long after that mistake.

At times living in this world you have to be hard and cold or warm and soft. The hard and soft are of the same person and neither is evil. The hard helps keep you from becoming victims of conmen and other criminals. The soft helps you see when to show mercy or to provide a helping hand.
