"Soul Singer in a Session Band" as written by and Conor Oberst....
See the soul singer in the session band
Shredded to ribbons beneath a microphone stand
Felt the quickness of pity like a flash in a pan
For the soul singer in the session band

A red carpet bagger makes a Blackberry call
To the plastic piranhas in the city of salt
Wasted wheat paste campaign post no bills on the wall
You mean nothing to no one but that is nobody's fault

See the soul singer in the session band
Shredded to ribbons beneath a microphone stand
Felt the quickness of pity like a flash in a pan
For the soul singer in the session band

I had a lengthy discussion about The Power of Myth
With a post-modern author who didn't exist
In this fictitious world all reality twists
I was a hopeless romantic, now I'm just turning tricks

Just like that soul singer in the session band
Shredded confetti beneath a microphone stand
Saw the Conflict of Interest slipping cash in the hand
For the soul singer in the session band

His room is on fire since he painted it red
There are a stranger's silk sequins at the foot of the bed
He has been weddings and funerals but still never wept
Now sorrow is pleasure when you want it instead

Just like the soul singer in the session band
Wailed like an infant atop a white baby grand
We'll need every sand bag and every man
To save the soul singer in the session band

Headlights or taillights, it's a flip of a coin
I have been coming and going since the day I was born
And I followed the breadcrumbs but I never got home
I grew old in an instant, now I am all on my own

Just like that soul singer in the session band
Shredded to nothing beneath a microphone stand
Saw the wave of the future through the crack in the dam
Drown the soul singer in the session band
Bless the soul singer in the session band

    General Commenti love this song.
when i saw him live in santa barbara, he said "i was a hopeless romantic, now i'm just sucking dick" instead of "turning tricks"

    General Comment''biographical'' blatently.
I love this form of writing.
It reminds me of some of kashers work on the ugly organ, how he once was a ''hopeless romantic'' but now he's just doing it for the songs. (similar to things in art is hard ''you fall in love and fail, to boost your cd sales'')
    clever
ill do a full breakdown later

General CommentI heard this performed at a show back in June, and it drives me insane that I can't listen to it again for the time being. My friend who was with me didn't like it very much, but I absolutely loved it. It just sounded so... energizing and happy.

General CommentBritneySpears Sucks: if you look around a little bit, you should be able to download a copy of it pretty easily :)

this song is basically another one of those Fame Is Very Bad ones, though the line "i had a lengthy discussion about the power of myth with a postmodern author who didn't exist" is pretty awesome.

    General CommentPlastic flowers,
The "post-modern" lyric is definitely hilarious. Seems like a bit of a crack at the ignorance of those who are hardline pm.

I'm not exactly sure yet what the entire song is about. I don't think it's a great song...definitely different than most B.E. songs.

General Commenti love this song. i saw him play it at bonnaroo and then downloaded the bonnaroo performance at bittorrent.

i like how bright eyes makes more and more happy songs lately.. this song makes me pretty happy. plasicflowers seems to have the meaning spelled out already. and the way conor uses some of his words here is really slick i think.

I had a lengthy discussion about the power of myth
With a postmodern author who didn't exist
In this fictitious world, our reality twists

    indeed.

Headlights or taillights, it's a flip of a coin
I've been coming and going since the day I was born
And I followed the bread crumbs but I never got home
I grew old in an instant, now I'm all on my own

    badass
