"Those Thieving Birds/Strange Behaviour" as written by and Johns....
Those thieving birds
Hang strung from an empty nest
This swan plagued pond
Foresaken and under whelmed

Those leaving words
Hang strong from an emptiness
Hang strong from an emptiness
Those thieving birds
Hang strung from an empty nest

Those theiving birds

This is tearing me apart
If the Sun won't shine
Forever will never be fine
Underneath the hollow ground
Lies a night time sky
For only a desperate eye

When I'm paranoid I see walls behind walls behind walls
When I'm over joyed I see falls over falls over falls
When I'm all alone I'll be wary and careful to
Only eat with uncles
Never talk to strangers
God is in the kitchen
Faking baby dangers
Not only liked but loved as well

If this streets air ain't up to par
I'll take my clothes and take this strange behaviour
Not only liked but loved as well

Change whatever karma means
For the only things that end never truly begin
If this streets air ain't up to par
I'll take my clothes and take this strange behaviour

Not only liked but loved as well
If this streets air ain't up to par
I'll take my clothes and take this strange behaviour
Not only liked but loved as well

When I'm paranoid I see walls behind walls behind walls
When I'm over joyed I see falls over falls over falls
When I'm all alone I'll be wary and careful to
Only eat with uncles
Never talk to strangers
God is in the kitchen
Faking baby dangers

If this keeps tearing me apart
The walls come down won't stop this empty feeling
For everything apart from this (x3)

Lonely in life
Dead or alive
If the truth had incursions
No more goodbyes
No more big lies

If the truth had versions
As long as you and I are together
I'll hold onto the jewellery
Like staple strapped clenched fist and tongs

Hang strung from an empty nest
Those thieving birds (x3)

Hang strung from an empty nest

General CommentThis song is Awsome, and the lyrics are very profound in some areas. daniel has gotten so good at song writting its not funny.

i used to like his early stuff but now i think it is a little more cheezy. this stuff is SO real and from the heart, he is putting a lot of love into it.

i myself feel like i relate to a lot of these lyrics. when i say profound i mean he is writting in a zen like way, i read a lot about buddhism and think about life a lot and it seems he is doing exactly the same, but at the same time learning to let go.

anyway, i love the line, those leaving words, hang strong from an emptiness, in buddhism they talk about how everything is empty, only mind, you can not label anything, but you can, who is? type stuff.

when im paranoid i see walls, this explains itself, when you are paranoid you try to express yourself but feel like you just keep running into invisible walls that are impossible to get through or past, life is a struggle and you suffer.

when im over joyed i see falls, when you feel good you flow like a waterfall straight easily over the walls.

dont really get the next bit but it doesnt need to make sense. to me, god is in the kitchen faking baby dangers means maybe, when we are kids we are filled with warnings of dangers that are not real, kids should be controlled but not obsessively, they need to learn for themselves.

to me the last bit, lonly in life etc, is also profound, we are all alone in a sense, this is not a good or bad thing, dead or alive? what are we? they are just words, you just have your mind to work out, and what and were is that mind, i dont know, you might say in your head, but they where is that part that claims it knows it is in your head, anyway, i dont know, i just think about it, and this is how i relate to these lyrics.

i like to try and sound wise, but i am not, but i think daniel is a guiniess, and also if anyone can contact him, tell him he must make this song and waiting all day into filmclips, the world needs to hear them.

    hope this helps some people.

General CommentTo me, this song is about the difficulties of maintaining a long-distance relationsip/marriage - a situation that was all too real for Daniel Johns and his wife, who were often separated for long periods of time on opposite sides of the world due to work commitments.

The line "I'll hold on to the jewellery, like staple-strapped clenched fist and tongs" obviously symbolises his intent to try to hold onto his marriage, no matter what obstacles they face. And one of those obstacles was probably the temptation to have extramarital affairs (on either of their parts).

As afrikert said, swans are indeed a species of bird that form life-long pair bonds, therefore the song-title "those thieving birds" is probably a metaphor for others who may have tried to come between the marriage (affairs either of them may have had etc.)

In this song, Dan seems to be saying none of these past indiscretions or lies matter to him anymore, as he's willing to give this relationship one last-ditch effort. (Sadly, in real life, this was not to be).

    General Commentthis song is amazing.
what the song means is pretty simple. its about him having been tempted to cheat (or actually cheating) on his wife, and promising her he won't again because he needs her forever.

"those thieving birds, swan plauged pond"- women that surround him that want him and adore him.

"not only liked, but loved as well"- that he's told that he is loved all the time, and im sure it means something when you hear it again and again by masses of people. it effects people, and its effected him.

    "Lonely in life
    Dead or alive
    If the truth had incursions
    No more goodbyes
    No more big lies
    if the truth had versions
As long as you and I are together
    I'll hold onto the jewellery
Like staple strapped clenched fist and tongs"

he'll hold on to his wedding ring, as a sign of their love for one another and not let anything or anyone get in the way of that ever again.

General CommentAshleylauren is correct- he stated in an interview that the song is about monogamy and that swans represent that since they are monogamous birds.

General Commentwell..im new to this site but...
not sure but at the moment this song stands out on the new album and that opening line is very similar to some parts on diorama (cant remember wat , maybe 'world upon your shoulders'). This song seems the most obvious step from diorama. love all of the 'chair albums.
    havnt thought aobut the meaning!

General CommentI think this is about losing what we really are or who
we really are rather. Like Those theiving birds=loss.
And he says "if the sun wont shine, forever we'll
never be fine" meaning if something good doesnt
happen, he'll be sad/mad forever. And then he sings
"Take my clothes and this strange behaviour" that
means, take of the bad and all the layers. In other
words strip me down to the old/normal me again.
Also "if this keep tearing me apart" sounds like the
loss of himself is tearing him apart. I think that is
    what this is aabout.
