You and I, we make a grand salute
Stare at each other
Like lost little birds
Across the room
And I remember the way you looked
I learned how to dance
But I've never shown it to you
My love

I know I was wrong
But you know that you'll always be
My love

Stay for a while
While our leaves are still green
Please
For me

I know I tried
But it's hard sometimes
The roots don't take it
Takes a while
And you pull at the strings
But they're broken it seems
The dance isn't over for me, no
My love

I know I was wrong
But you know that you'll always be
My love

Stay for a while
While our leaves are still green
Please
For me

i really really like this song but i dont know why? i think it is quite a sad song and the writer is dwelling in the past, she is remiscing about an old love. thats what i think. =]

yeah i love this song, but i don't think it is about old love, it sounds to me like it is about a relationship which is about to end but she obviously doesn't want it to, she doesn't want to let go and is asking the other person to hold on.. it is sad, i can relate.

I agree with indiernr, I think it's about a relationship that is falling apart. She obviously doesn't want it to fall apart, and she's trying to get him to stay with her. She feels that it's falling apart because of her, as well. "I know I was wrong, but you know that you'll always be my love." I also see "I learned how to dance, but I'd never shown it to you" as her holding back some part of herself in the relationship, like she wasn't giving it her all. And even though she's made this mistake, they're trying to work it out but it's still between them. She thinks, or just hopes, it'll go away, but it seems like he's not sure or not willing to work it out.

That's just my spin on it..it's probably pretty shaped by personal experience, though. :)

    Memory

I agree with the first commentor but it can be easily expressed eitherway. I tend to think of the only guy I ever truly loved when I hear this.

I adore this song... and it introduced me to Basia Bulat!

The way I imagine the story is that she crosses paths with a recent heartbreak in the opening of the song and it brings back memories of their relationship and her regret. She is pleading inside for him to accept her back as she knows she's done him wrong but she still loves him. She uses a plant metaphor for their relationship - one that she tried to care for and tend to so that it could grow solid roots and flourish, but she has failed. She did something wrong and now their green, blossoming love has (maybe) died before it could grow strong. She also likens herself to a dancing marionette... as if learning how to dance is like learning how to love. At first she didn't know how to dance, and her strings seemed broken, but now she does know and she wants to dance for and with him. He may have already given up on their relationship but she's asking him to give them another chance.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Head > Heels
Ed Sheeran
“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
