"Trophy" as written by and Natasha Khan....
The trophy that I made for us
In fur and gold
Got into the wrong pair of hands
And truth was sold

They bought it for, oh, so much less
Then it was worth
And every man that touched it
Found a heaven on earth

Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms

The queens and the court jesters
Clapped, adored
Their hearts swelled to overdrive
And mercy soared

Mercy this and mercy that
Let justice prevail
But I just want my trophy back
It's not for sale

Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms

Creatures of mercy, shoot, shoot
Shoot them down and set me free
Creatures of mercy, shoot, shoot
Shoot them down and set me free

When I got my trophy back
It took some time
To polish it to gold from black
And shoot the lion

When I put it back inside
And locked the door
Our trophy of mercy
Is a trophy no more

Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms
Heaven is a feeling I get in your arms

Creatures of mercy, shoot, shoot
Shoot them down and set me free
Creatures of mercy, shoot, shoot
Shoot them down and set me free

I would also agree that “Trophy” is intended in a sexual context. However, rather than interpreting a rape theme I perceive the song to be a story of prostitution. To me the young protagonist is coerced by the “Wrong pair of hands” into a world where her “Trophy” is sold “for much less than it is worth”. The queen and court jesters are the Pimps and punters respectively.

The protagonist encourages the “creatures of mercy” (whomever they maybe) to shoot down the people who have entombed her within this world and to ultimately set her free. This is symbolised by the return of her trophy.

When I got my trophy back
    It took some time
To polish it to gold from black
    And shoot the lion
When I put it back inside
    And locked the door
    A trophy of mercy
    Is a trophy no more

The polishing is an attempt at some sort of cleansing of the conscience, an attempt to return virtue perhaps, but it seems to be too late. The victim is so traumatised by her ordeal as a prostitute she vows to become celibate. I have no idea why she is shooting lions though.

General CommentIt might sound blunt for such cryptic lyrics, but maybe the 'queens and court jesters' could literally represent those in a jury. Running with the idea of rape, the fact that no matter what 'justice prevails' you can never get back what is lost...

maybe not just a court setting/trial, but just an idea.

General Commenti think a few of the lines are wrong...i'm pretty sure the song says:

    Their hearts swelled too
    Overdrive and mercy soared
    Mercy this and mercy that
    Let justice prevail

    then

When I got my trophy back
    It took some time
To polish it, to gold from black

and on the chorus, instead of "creatures of love feed", i'm pretty sure it says "creatures of mercy"

General CommentWhen she says "creatures of love feed" it really reminds me of Bjork, especially "Venus as a Boy".

General Commentit is 'They BOUGHT it for so much less than it was worth.' I think it might be about people not valuing artistic creativity, seeing it merely in terms of monetary value..
