"Time Won't Let Me Go" as written by and Sam Endicott....
Whenever I look back
On the best days of my life
I think I saw them all on T.V.
I am so homesick now for
Someone that I never knew
I am so homesick for
Someplace I will never be

Time won't let me go
Time won't let me go
If I could do it all again
I'd go back and change everything
But time won't let me go

I never had a 'Summer of 69'
Never had a Cherry Valance of my own
All these precious moments
You promised me would come in time
So where was I when I missed mine?

Time won't let me go
Time won't let me go
If you gave me back those years
I'd do it all better I swear
Time won't let me go

Ba ba ba ba ba...
Ba ba ba ba ba...
Ba ba ba ba ba...
Ba ba ba ba ba...

If I could go back once again
I would change everything, yeah
If I could go back once again
I'd do it all so much better

Time won't let me go
Time won't let me go
If I could do it all again
I'd go back and change everything
But you won't ever let me go

Ba ba ba ba ba...
Ba ba ba ba ba...
Ba ba ba ba ba...
Ba ba ba ba ba...

General CommentThe lyrics are pretty straight forward as to what the song lyrics mean. Sam's talking about listening to all these songs, and hearing these stories about great times/moments in other peoples lives and he feels he doesn't have anything to reflect back on and be like "wow, that was awesome". Or just some moment in time that will always bring a smile to his face. You obviously can't go back in time (unless you're Michael J. Fox..ziing) so time won't let him go back, but if it would, he would take the chances he didn't, he would be more proactive than reactive. Really it's a song about regret. He wants all these things he hears about, "someone that i never knew, someplace i will never be" but he can't have them and even if they were right there in front of him he prob wouldn't recognize them anyway.

My InterpretationTo me, this song is about not experiencing life to it's fullest...

    "Whenever I look back
On the best days of my life
I think I saw them all on T.V."

Like he spent his childhood watching other people live a life that he wanted himself, or wants himself. "If you give me back those years, I'd do it all better I swear", sounds like he has no exciting memories to look back on and he regrets not having more fun when he was younger...

At least that's what the song means to me... The first time I heard this song I couldn't help but think of my own life... I spent my high school days locked away in my bedroom watching movies and playing video games, I didn't go out with my friends I didn't do all the stuff that so many kids my age were doing. If anyone ever invited me somewhere I would shrug it off and say 'no, that's alright...'. Until people stopped inviting me... I spent so much of my college days the exact same way, locked away in my dorm room watching movies, playing games, or listening to music... I look back on my life and I try to reflect on my most cherished memories and most of them have happened in recent years... Some days I find myself feeling nostalgic, though I don't have much to feel nostalgic about. Which to me, feels like the line "I am so homesick now for, Someplace I will never be"... "All these precious moments you promised me would come in time, so where was I when I missed mine?", when I was in high school, the phrase "these are the best days of your lives!" was thrown around a bit, but I didn't do anything to make them the "best days of my life", and I kind of regret that, and sometimes I wish I could go back and change that, have more fun be more social... The same was said of college, "You'll love it! It's better than high school! It's really where you're going to meet the friends you'll keep... Blah blah blah." I wish I could go back and be more social, not be the guy that never left his room... It's just about a sea of regrets... But this is getting really redundant and I apologize, so I will leave it with this... I wish I could go back and live life and have really cool stories to tell my children someday, but I'll never be able to. That's fine... Because though I wish I could change the past, I wouldn't want to risk losing my present. I love my wife, and the life we lead, and I look forward to the day we have children. I only hope the do more than I did. I hope they never get the same meaning from this song as me...

General CommentI agree with most of you about the song being about regret. but i also think its about how you see someones experiences on TV and you really just want to be in that persons shoes.

"I think I saw them all on T.V.
I am so homesick now for
    Someone that I never knew
I am so homesick now for
    Someplace I will never be"

so i think the songs about wanting to experience new things and not having the time to do it

General Comment This song makes me feel better about my life. Growing up you see many pivotal life moments idyllically depicted in movies and tv shows, childhood sweetheart, romantic proposal, scenic wedding, babies first steps, beach vacations, etc etc. Now regardless of the reality of everyone around you, you kind of expect to have these moments. Somehow just hearing Sam Endicott, you know this great singer from this amazing band, express feelings I have myself of missing out & regret etc. made me realize how unrealistic it is to expect all these shining moments. Life is so different for everyone and not everyone is meant for a marriage 2.5 kids and summer vacations in Mexico. I'm 39 I dj and have never been married, I didn't have the traditional milestone moments but I have had some great unconventional ones. Songs like this are why I love music!

General Commentesp. love how it goes against what people often claim about how they would do it all over again, if they could go back ... that's mostly rubbish for most people ... me, I'm sure, if I could go back in time, I'd do lots of stuff very differently ... but time won't let me go ;)

My InterpretationI think this song is clearly about regret and missed opportunities. And how largely, he's lived his life through pop culture and TV and as he got older he regrets that he didn't have any 'real' memory to call his own.

Like Cherry Valance is a character from the Outsiders, and Summer of 69' is a reference to Bryan Adam's song which, ironically, is about a memorable summer filled with good times with friends and family.

Once again, something he regrets not having and if he could he would go back and change it.

General Commentwell, the song is about our bullshit generation. most of us youth lead such empty lifes, not a single moment that's important that isn't a huge tragedy (9/11, iraq)

"I am so homesick now for
    Someone that I never knew
I am so homesick now for
    Someplace I will never be"

i feel that way so much. like, "where's the childhood that you fucks stole from me?"

General CommentThis is just my opinion, but it seems like all the "good times" that people remenisce about never happened to him. He wishes he could go back and relive everything to try to make it better and notice the good stuff.

The song "Summer of 69" focuses largely on nostalgia and summer love. He feels like nothing worth being nostalgiac about has happened to him.

Cherry Valance is a character in the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. Not sure how that ties in. There's probably another Cherry Valance somewhere I'm not remembering at the moment.
