"Salt of The Earth" as written by Michael L. Shepard and David Owen....
Oh like the salt of the earth
Each correction makes us stronger
Absconder in happiness, yeah

Voyage up my river
Full of tears it's yerking
Lookout now, doctor's unleashing:

All this dangerous, this is dangerous
I can't hide your danger eye i can't hide
Your death selection

One day i would've fallen so in love
One day i would've painted reds and greens of one who let me live long enough
But there's suits in love with their own poises
Hypocrites with no more voices
Corporate cowards with no more choices

This is dangerous, this is dangerous
I can't hide your danger eye i can't hide
Your death selection

All is lost for us if heaven
All is lost for us if heaven fails
All is, all is, all is..

General CommentThis song is definitely about the stuff that went down with Capitol Records.

The beginning is them being happy with getting the record deal and trying to go along with Capitol's demands. But then they realize how "dangerous" that is and that it's killing their creativity. They lament about the things they could have done with their music and that kind of exposure. But the corporate game is too much and has killed so many other artists. So they're coming back to what they had before and counting on the fans to make it worth it.

General Comment"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men."-Mathew 5:13

Has nothing to do with Capitol. The spectrum is a lot broader than that. Its saying that we have chosen death itself. That we as people are just allowing doctors, false love, corporate filth to persuade our every choice with out ever choosing ourselves. That we as people are letting other people make our choices. That we don't even have a voice anymore for anything. This is extremely dangerous.

General Commentactually, this song is about a close friends of Michael who's newborn child died. and in the song he mentions about how the child will never get to experience the good and bad of life.

General Commenti love this song so much.
probably one of my favorites on this album..
    its so sad.

this song hints strongly at abortion.
i think thats what its really about..

i'll just go ahead and do a full analyzation of what i think the lyrics are saying.

the salt of the earth is used in the Bible as a name for Jesus.. i'm not sure exactly what this has to do with my point of view on this song, its probably contradicting it but oh well.

    'each correction makes us stronger,
    absconder in happiness, yeah'

    the correction being the abortion,
absconder (someone who runs away) in happiness afterwards because she thinks she solved all of her problems by aborting the baby.

    voyage up my river
    full of tears it's yerking
(the girls sadness about an accidental pregnancy)

    Lookout now, doctor's unleashing:
(doctor doing the abortion, the mother telling the child to look out.. yeah.)

All this dangerous, this is dangerous
    I can't hide your danger eye i can't hide
    Your death selection
(pretty obvious what its talking about.. the baby can't hide from the doctor or what is about to happen to him/her.)

One day i would've fallen so in love
One day i would've painted reds and greens of one who let me live long enough
(the baby talking about what would have happened in it's life if his/her mother would've let him/her live long enough.)

But there's suits in love with their own poises
    Hypocrites with no more voices
Corporate cowards with no more choices
(talking about the greedy doctors not really giving a shit, just killing peoples babies despite what they might think is morally right. just doing it for the money basically.)

This is dangerous, this is dangerous
    I can't hide your danger eye i can't hide
    Your death selection
(going back to the baby saying they cant hide from the abortion)

All is lost for us if heaven
All is lost for us if heaven fails
All is, all is, all is..
(this might be a stretch, but this COULD be like all the voices of the aborted babies talking about they're doomed if heaven fails them because they never even got a chance to live.)

and thats just what i think...
pretty sad. abortion is so wrong.
