"Riddle" as written by and John Ondrasik....
There was a man back in '95
Whose heart ran out of summers
But before he died, I asked him
Wait, what's the sense in life?
Come over me, come over me

He said
Son, why you got to sing that tune?
Catch a Dylan song or some eclipse of the moon
Let an angel swing and make you swoon
Then you will see, you will see

Then he said
Here's a riddle for you
Find the answer
There's a reason for the world
You and I

Picked up my kid from school today
Did you learn anything causin' the world today
You can't live in a castle far away
Now talk to me, come talk to me

He said
Dad, I'm big, but we're smaller than small
In the scheme of things, well, we're nothing at all
Still every mother's child sings a lonely song
So play with me, come play with me

And, hey, dad
Here's a riddle for you
Find the answer
There's a reason for the world
You and I

I said
Son, for all I've told you
When you get right down to the
Reason for the world
Who am I?

There are secrets that we still have left to find
There have been mysteries from the beginning of time
There are answers we're not wise enough to see

He said
You looking for a clue
I love you free

The batter swings and the summer flies
As I look into my angel's eyes
A song plays on while the moon is high over me
Something comes over me

I guess we're big, and I guess we're small
If you think about it, man, you know we got it all
'Cause we're all we got on this bouncing ball
And I love you free
I love you freely

Here's a riddle for you
Find the answer
There's a reason for the world
You and I

General CommentWhy is there not a comment on here? I like the vocals and the background music best of all in this song. It's kinda hard to make heads or tails of this, but I think it may be trying to figure out what your part in the world is about, or finding exactly where you belong.

General CommentThis song is pretty straight forward. While I haven't read anything official on it here's what I have on the song:

He's trying to figure out his place in life and he keeps looking and asking for the answer. He keeps getting hints of what the answer is. First from the old man (I believe its his father), then from his son, and then finally from his "angel" or wife. The answer finally comes over him after he looks into his wife's eyes

"As I look into my angel's eyes.
A song plays on while the moon is hiding.
Over me, something comes over me."

The answer to his riddle, what's the reason for the world or the meaning of life, is "You and I". Whether we are big or small, all we have on this Earth is each other. So the meaning of life for each of us is the relationships that we have. Once he discover's this he comes to the moral of this riddle, we must love each other freely.

It's a great song and is very peaceful in its own way.

General CommentSomeone elsewhere on the net teases, "What does the phrase "love you free" mean to you? (It's a line from a Five for Fighting song fortuitously called The Riddle -- but don't look to the song for the answer!"

What do you this person means the the song doesn't have the answer?

General CommentI think this is a very Taoist song
I'm not a Taoist, myself, but I have studied Taoism
And am very interested in it to this day, even though I am Christian
The basic principal of Taoism is "Be"
    Simply exist
    Natural life.

Do not try to be anything, just be

Buddha said the cause of all suffering is desire.
In this song, the desire is the desire to learn what the "reason for the world" is
But whenever he stops thinking about it, it comes to him on its own
the reason is "you and I"
which means that there basically is no hidden reason, but an obvious one
Living life is the reason for life
The same was sitting in a chair is the reason for the chair
Drinking out of a cup is the reason for the cup
Living a life is the reason for the life

The most basic principal in religion/psychology.philosophy/or belief
And yet, for some reason, the hardest to really grasp
Because we are told so much to look for the "hidden" meanings of things
And that "you can't judge a book by its cover"
That we forget that sometimes things are just how they seem
    Just how they look.
    Just how they feel.

i think this is the song in a nutshell:
The old man/(father of the man) in wisdom knows the meaning of life.
The the young boy/(son of the man) in innocence also knows the meaning of life.
The man in his middle age starts off questioning the meaning upon the death of his father (he's in pain). But relearns it from his father's words and more importantly from his son's words and actions.

    What's the sense in Life?
Love is the answer. And Joy, Simple Joy. And the Joy of Beauty....etc...
