"Forgiven" as written by Robert Westerholt, Sharon J. Den Adel and Martinus J. E. Martijn Spierenburg....
Couldn't save you from the start
Love you so it hurts my soul
Can you forgive me for trying again
Your silence makes me hold my breath
Time has passed you by

Oh, for so long I've tried to shield you from the world
Oh, you couldn't face the freedom on your own
Here I am left in silence

You gave up the fight
You left me behind
All that's done's forgiven
You'll always be mine
I know deep inside
All that's done's forgiven

I watched the clouds drifting away
Still the sun can't warm my face
I know it was destined to go wrong
You were looking for the great escape
To chase your demons away

Oh, for so long I've tried to shield you from the world
Oh, you couldn't face the freedom on your own
And here I am left in silence

You gave up the fight
You left me behind
All that's done's forgiven
You'll always be mine
I know deep inside
All that's done's forgiven

I've been so lost since you've gone
Why not me before you?
Why did fate deceive me?
Everything turned out so wrong
Why did you leave me in silence?

You gave up the fight
You left me behind
All that's done's forgiven
You'll always be mine
I know deep inside
All that's done's forgiven

General CommentSomeone she loves has died, apparently by suicide or at the least giving up on life perhaps allowing his life to end without struggle. She is grief stricken, but still loves him and forgives him for the pain he has caused, and though she wasn't able to save him, she knows she is forgiven this failure as well.

General CommentI took the "time has passed you by" to mean they're beyond time now, it means nothing.

What's great about this song is everyone can relate to it. Everyone's lost someone, and you can relate to the sentiments in this song and the beautiful vocals.

I think this could be about a loved one who was terminally ill and "gave up the fight". The anger that can happen in cases like this - things can be said and done that you have to deal with after they're gone.

I also can relate it to the suicide of a close friend, but as I said, multiple meanings apply to this. Whatever the case, can't go past this song!

General CommentSharon herself told me what the song means when I met her in Philadelphia. She said in her circle of friends, a father lost his child, and she wrote the song from his point of view.

My InterpretationI first heard this song when the album first came out, during a very difficult time in my life, and it decribed everything I was feeling so well. It was days before one of my closest friends took their own life.

"Couldn't save you from the start"
This described the feeling I felt, of hopelessness, to learn that someone close was gone and there was nothing I could have done because they never let me in to what was going on inside them. Alternately this could describe someone succumbing to an illness of which there was nothing to be done.

"Love you so it hurts my soul
Can you forgive me for trying again"
Could describe words to a lover that has passed, or a close friend, where trying again means moving on with life and finding new relationships.

"Your silence makes me hold my breath"
If someone you care about has been slowly fading away, you would be by their side, and the moment at which they leave this life, the silence would be shocking. To know that you will no more hear noise or talk or anything from someone can leave you overwhelmed.

    "Time has passed you by"
Time goes on, and those lost to us are left behind as time passes by.

"Oh, for so long I've tried to shield you from the world"
Everyone wants to protect their loved ones from all that could harm them in the world.

"Oh, you couldn't face the freedom on your own"
Being independent and isolated from what you have known all your life, and an exposure to so many new responsibilities with nobody to help you handle it can be very overwhelming.

    "You gave up the fight
    You left me behind"
Again could refer to a long suffered illness when the battle is finally lost as the person 'gives up the fight and leaves loved ones behind. Also, as for my personal experience, can describe the feeling of someone choosing to leave this world and give up the fight with their inner demons.

    "You'll always be mine"
Lover or a friend or family, they are always going to be yours in your memories.

    "I know deep inside
    All that's done's forgiven"
There comes a point that after someone has passed, you let go of any troubles or issues you may have had with them, and all wrongs are forgiven.

"I watched the clouds drifting away
Still the sun can't warm my face"
The shock of losing a loved one can leave you feeling numb. You don't really feel anything until you can comprehend that they are gone.

"You were looking for the great escape
    To chase your demons away"
Past trials have weighed heavy on their minds and no matter how hard you try, you will never forget. The ending of your life can be seen as the 'great escape'.

"I've been so lost since you've gone
    Why not me before you?
    Why did fate deceive me?
    Everything turned out so wrong
Why did you leave me in silence?"
Describes the grieving process. Feeling lost without a large part of your life, wondering why it was them before you. Why were there no signs to tell you something was wrong? Why did they have to leave?

My InterpretationThe first time I heard this song, it was shortly after my cousin committed suicide. I believe the lyrics fit perfectly for someone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, particularly through suicide.

"Couldn't save you from the start"
The person was never able to help their loved one, they were never able to save them from themselves.

"Love you so it hurts my soul"
The person has such a deep love for the deceased, and it hurts to love them so much, because of how the person is self-destructive.

"Can you forgive me for trying again
Your silence makes me hold my breath
    Time has passed you by"
The person seeks forgiveness for interfering again, and trying to save their life, even though the help was unwanted. The silence of the person, whether because of death, or because they are being ignored, makes the person hold their breath, fearing their loved one's reaction.

"Oh, for so long I've tried to shield you from the world
Oh, you couldn't face the freedom on your own"
The person tried to protect their loved one from the world, to keep them safe. The deceased couldn't face the freedom on their own, because they were so self-destructive and suicidal

"Here I am left in silence"
Pretty explanatory, the person is left in silence because their loved one has committed suicide.

    "You gave up the fight
    You left me behind"
Their loved one gave up the fight of living, and left them behind, suffering from the loss.

    "All that's done's forgiven"
Even though the person is hurting, they forgive their loved one for taking their own life.

    "You'll always be mine
    I know deep inside
    All that's done's forgiven"
The person knows that their loved one will always be a part of them, will always be 'theirs'. Although they are hurting, and angry, deep inside, they know that they forgive their loved one.

"I watched the clouds drifting away
Still the sun can't warm my face"
The person can't feel happiness anymore, even when things are going right, even when the bad times end. They are too burdened and saddened by the death of their loved one.

"I know it was destined to go wrong
You were looking for the great escape
    To chase your demons away"
The person knew it was going to go wrong, because their loved one was looking for the 'great escape' - suicide- to end their troubles once and for all.

"I've been so lost since you've gone
    Why not me before you?
    Why did fate deceive me?"
The person has been lost and nothing has been going right since their loved one died. They feel angry that they had to suffer through this, and that they should have gone first. They feel like fate tricked them into believing they would leave first.

    "Everything turned out so wrong
Why did you leave me in silence?"
None of this was supposed to happen, and it turned out wrong, because the person couldn't be saved. The narrator of the song was left alone in silence, because their loved one is gone.

My Interpretation"Time has passed you by" doesn't have to mean the person was old, necessarily, it just means they died. If you're dead, well, time has certainly passed you by, old or young.

Before I read all the comments, I was thinking that I really don't think this is about a lover. I was getting a strong vibe that it was being directed at a close friend. Now I see that it is about a father who lost his child and that fits perfectly, but it still resonates most with me on the level of having lost a friend. Maybe that's just because I have lost friends, some to death and some...just lost, but who feel almost as gone. Sometimes, strangely, they feel more gone. For me, it fits that situation perfectly. I love songs that make me bawl like crazy. Is that normal?

General CommentThis song is very personal to me, because it reminds me of a difficult relationship between a parent and child. They both made terrible mistakes and hurt each other, but in the end, they forgive each other. I know that's not really what the song is about, but that' what it makes me think of whenever I hear it.

A father lost there child, which must be one of the worist losses a father can have. but what ever the true meaning is, or if it is just " A loss" it is a great song, which is sung so wonderfully ( sorry bout my bad spelling) it is just a great song.

    General CommentIt's not
"All the time has passed you by"
    it's just
    "Time has passed you by"

    It's not
"You were looking for the greatest escape"
    it's
"You were looking for the great escape"

General CommentIt could be suicide but it could also maybe be someone who has died of old age and left her behind.
"time has passed you by" could imply that the person is old and has bin sick and has finally gven up and passed on and left behind their soul mate. It would tie in with their song Memories which is also about someone who has died and left behind their soul mate. The Memories music video shows an old woman walking into an old house where she obviously lived years ago with her husband and when she steps inside she turns into her young self and wonders throughout the house recalling all her old memories o her and her husband when they were young. Very sad! Sniff sniff. :(
