This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
This won't break your heart
But I just think it could
Cause I haven't tried as hard as I should
To separate you from everything I do
But I would never want to come between us two
[Chorus]
I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me
Now I'm thinking back
To what I said before
I hope your heart won't have to hurt anymore
Cause it's really not that sad from here
Because the moments I can feel you near
They keep you close to me my dear
And if they ever become too clear...
[Chorus: x2]
Now you've gone away
Don't worry it's OK
That you're gone away
Further than yesterday
But you'll never leave these scenes
My mind replays
[Chorus: x4]
But I just think it could
Cause I haven't tried as hard as I should
To separate you from everything I do
But I would never want to come between us two
[Chorus]
I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me
Now I'm thinking back
To what I said before
I hope your heart won't have to hurt anymore
Cause it's really not that sad from here
Because the moments I can feel you near
They keep you close to me my dear
And if they ever become too clear...
[Chorus: x2]
Now you've gone away
Don't worry it's OK
That you're gone away
Further than yesterday
But you'll never leave these scenes
My mind replays
[Chorus: x4]

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
I think this song represents a mature break up. They went their separate ways but still there are things that bring back the memories of past relationships in everyday life, hence the smell of the wind as a trigger for memories, and since it was a mutual break up and they both cared for eachother he doesnt want her to feel empathetic for him so he is telling her that he is alright to spare her the grief. There is some guilt on both sides of the break up. This song also represents the difficulty of breaking up by the uncertanty he shows in the line "where have you gone now" Over all this is a very good song and it reminds me of a very significant relationship of my past.
I think this song is about a person that you have probably known for a long time and would like to create distance between youself and them.
The hard part is that while you want distance, you really dont want to hurt the other person. You dont want to be the one to ruin the relationship, so by keeping their memory vague you are trying to prevent yourself from being blamed for the separation.
The excuse for this situation is explained by telling the other person that memories keep us close.
Although it is beautifully performed, I think this song is semi-cowardly, because under these circumstances the person singing is simply trying to escape a delicate situation by manipulating the other to not feel bad... but the other person has this right simply because the singer is misleading them.
I think the lesson in learned in the end of the song when the singer is asking " where in the world have you gone now?"... a sign of their regret for letting the relationship get away.
This song could in fact apply to any close relationship...
Wow. This song is amazing, I can't believe there isn't more comments. This is my favourite off the album by far =D

I think this song is about a one sided break up.
The other person broke up with the singer because they had to. The singer understands but would rather not have broken up. So to stop the other person from feeling bad (because the singer still cares about them) he's going to "keep your memory vague" and not sit and think about that person and make the situation even more difficult for both of them.
He's accepting that it's over and trying not to make the situation harder than it is even though he wishes it wasn't over.
They're trying to forget about the girl, and not be hurt, so she wouldn't feel dreadful for their problemed relationship.
i feel like this song is about 2 really close friends that ended up falling for each other. it was great while it lasted but unfortunately the relationship fell apart. it would just be way too fucking painful for them to see each other again and try to become friends so they decided to just distance themselves from each other. it fits the song, think about it.
I agree. I have not heard this song in a very long time but I heard it today and wanted to see what others have thought it meant.

I had a very close friend in 2002-2006 and we had fallen for each other. She was married and we were never more than friends and in 2006, with her husband being jealous of our relationship, she said she had to focus on her marriage and I have not heard from her since.

This song reminds me of her. I still miss her
I feel this song is about the love of one friend to another, but to save the friendship, the friend doesn't let the other know and thus keeping their memory vague. eh my first try at deciphering lyrics
They're saying "Sometimes so it reminds me", not "Sometimes the wind reminds me", though I used to think it was that too
To me, it sounds more like he's singing to a departed friend/lover. He's letting them know he doesn't blame them for dying, and that even though it hurts to think about them, he still does so they live on in his heart.
i hope your heart wont have to hurt anymore cause it's really not that sad from here because the moments i can feel you near they keep you close to me my dear
That part especially sounds more like death than a breakup to me.
