If you're leaving, leave the cigarettes.
You've already got the lighter and the keys.
She packs her boxes. He knows that she's serious
not by the look in her face but by the lack of rings.
Words lost their meanings long ago.
Right around the time when she let him know.
oh, oh, oh, oh

Chorus:
Have you ever heard a word?
(Rather be lonely in love, than alive with you and dead)
Have you ever heard a word?
(Hear me out this time)

There is algebra in gasoline.
Burning pictures, pages, and photographs.
Fire can make a conscience clean.
(Strike the match, we'll see)
Rolls the window down, calls his name and pulls away.
Rethinks every word he's said in disarray.
Watched their house burn and said in turn.
What made it home, drive away

(Chorus)

Where does one start
to pick up pieces
of a gasoline heart?
When all he has is driving away.

(Chorus)

General CommentIf you're leaving, leave the cigarettes.
You've already got the lighter and the keys.

He's saying if she's planning to leave, she still is always welcomed back and she can leave stuff at the house I guess if she's ever coming back.

She packs her boxes. He knows that she's serious
not by the look in her face but by the lack of rings.

Maybe marriage, but it could also mean by rings under her eyes, stress, lack of sleep, ect.. which points to that she's feeling relieved for once and the concern of the split was on for a while.

Words lost their meanings long ago.
Right around the time when she let him know.

He's never taken it seriously ever since she brought it up.

    There is algebra in gasoline.
    Burning pictures, pages, and photographs.
Fire can make a conscience clean.
    (Strike the match, we'll see)

He's trying to eliminate all memories of her.

Rolls the window down, calls his name and pulls away.
Rethinks every word he's said in disarray.
Watched their house burn and said in turn.
What made it home, drive away

and as they both split, there's no turning back.

    :/ that's just what I'm thinking.

Song MeaningMy take on the chorus is this:

"Have you ever heard a word?"
    - He's asking if she's heard anything that he's said, and he's probably asked her to reconsider the divorce/break-up.

"(Rather be lonely in love, than alive with you and dead)"
    - He's saying that out of the three choices, he'd rather deny that the divorce/break-up ever happened, as opposed to being alive and living in the real world or being dead.

"Have you ever heard a word?"
    - Same as above

"Hear me out this time (hear me out this time)"
    - He's saying that he's asked her to reconsider the divorce/break-up and he wants her to at least listen and hear him out.

General Commenti don't think thats a tribute to a band.

i think its basically a scorned heart. gasoline burns and a burnt heart is a broke heart.

where do you begn to pick up the peices of a broken heart?
