Well I climbed the seven summits
And I swam the seven seas
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
I fought in the jungles
And I fought in the streets
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
Once I had a reason
Don't know what it could be
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
Well I sang to myself
That I want to be free
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see

I walked the empty desert
And I was burned in the heat
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
I crossed the frozen wasteland
And in the bitter cold did freeze
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
And I will knock on every door
For I do not have a key
And the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
Well I sang to myself
That I want to be free
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see

They shot a man in Soho
Couldn't guess his age
I found his empty journal
I filled up every page
I called up my state senator
They said he wasn't there
The secretary took my name
And man she sounded scared
So I counted my misfortunes
I added up the blame
I picked through all the garbage
I checked off all the names
I read in the newspaper
They'd questioned all my friends
They hoped that they could find me
Before I struck again
Well I sang to myself
That I want to be free
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see

So when thirsty I will drink
When hungry I will steal
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
So tonight I walk in anger
With worn shoes on my feet
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see
And I will sing to myself
That I'm gonna be free
But the road I must travel
Its end I cannot see

There's a sign along the highway
But it's too dark now to read

General Commentit sounds like the never ending quest for freedom, like a revolution. i mean the fact that it's an ex-member of RATM there's probably a deeper maning than that, but thats just what i get from the lyrics.

General Commentit's not an ex-member anymore. RATM is back together and touring again and from what i've heard they've got a new single out.

General Commentit sounds like he is searching for freedom, but on this 'road to freedom' he cant see its end. he doesnt know what will happen... but like alsk8r said, its probably deeper than that.

well from what i understood its about the neverending quest for freedom and liberation, which's end he cannot see, and that from all the fighting you can forget your original reason

    "I walked the empty desert
And I was burned in the heat
But the road I must travel
    Its end I cannot see
    I crossed the frozen wasteland
And in the bitter cold did freeze"

about the continuous fighting for the cause that is still far from accomplished

"And I will knock on every door
For I do not have a key"

not really sure what he meant here

"They shot a man in Soho
    Couldn't guess his age
    I found his empty journal
    I filled up every page"

i think this is about memorizing poeple killed in vein
diddent get what the age part was about though

"o when thirsty I will drink
    When hungry I will steal"

you have to do what you need to survive and keep fighting

like you guys said though, its probably alot deeper then that since its tom morello after all

Song MeaningI feel that the song is spoken from the point of view of a veteran who was formerly content with his rights and freedom in the united states. But now he is on his search for a better freedom. He feels that he can not see the "end of the road for freedom". I believe at one point he contacts his state senator and gives them his grievances. The next part describes him essentially killing his senator and his representatives. I have no clue as to whether or not he means this as the man described actually killed them and is living as a fugitive or if the man described told the secretary his grievances and she got nervous that someone had caught on to their "scheme". If it is the latter of the two he then gives an analogy about how our freedoms are limited and the man does this to multiple representatives and the analogy is that he is basically considered a fugitive in society because his ideas contradict the mainstream thoughts. At which point his freedom of speech is infringed upon that he feels he is being persecuted for his beliefs. This does not phase the man as he will do whatever it takes to preserve his rights. The final lines mean that he has traveled this road to freedom for so long that the sun has set on his freedoms and he either no longer cares or knows how far he has gone on his quest for freedom. This song is simply amazing. Full of intelligence and the music itself is very pleasing. Good job Tom and keep doing this kind of work.
