I don’t know where we’re going
But I know we’ve gone too far
And I hope it isn’t showing,
But I think I love you
And I can’t believe you’re leaving
Just when I let you in
And when you had me believing
I could feel again

I could give a million reasons
Why we should not be friends
Our moods change like the seasons
My mood ends your mood begins
And you’re a tease, you’re a cockblocker
You’re a loud mouth bitch and a big talker,
But that’s okay.
You’ll grow up someday.

You’re the pill I never wanted to take.
An anti-misanthrope
Mine was the heart I never thought you would be break
My one hope was that I’d survive you

I’ve shown up for you in ways that boy never would
But I know you’ll go back to him and maybe you should
But I hope you don’t go backwards
‘Cause I’m going on ahead
And one day you’ll wish that you had stuck with me instead

You’re the pill I never wanted to take.
An anti-misanthrope
Mine was the heart I never thought you would be break
My one hope was that I’d survive you

As I wander through Union Square
I remember when you followed me there
You were the stalker I kind of wanted to have
Being your half-boyfriend was only half bad

You’re the pill I never wanted to take.
An anti-misanthrope
Mine was the heart I never thought you would be break
My one hope was that I’d survive you

I felt it was about a guy who had finally started loving the person they were with right when the
other person cheated on him. It took a while for the guy to love the other because their partner was
immature. so, they break up but remain friends and eventually they become close friends. But he
feels that neither of them are letting go, so he is a half boyfriend. Someone who would be what
they felt was a relationship but knew it was nothing more because even though they still act like
they are in a relationship, their not. the person loves him, but they'll still stray to the other guy.
however, the partner can't see him being with anyone else so they lead him on and make
sure he doesn't go out with anyone else and piss him off.

My InterpretationI took a slightly different take on the song.
I see it as two people who were not in a serious relationship to begin with, but the singer falls in love, despite not wanting to. They go through a lot together, but the other person loves someone else and leaves. After it's over, the singer sees that the relationship wasn't necessarily good, but he misses it.

General CommentIt's never straightforward with gay guys. :/ Poor Jay. He's fallen in love with a guy who he thought he was immune to, someone he always thought he would be 'just good friends' with. Maybe the guy's a bit of a heartbreaker. Earlier on it was the guy who fancied Jay but it wasn't reciprocated, and as time has gone on and the guy's moved on, Jay begins to see through his own unhapiness (misanthropy) and realises that he's missed out.
And, yep. Jay's gay IRL, and the song's about a guy.

General Commentfifisgenie, exactly. I think it's about a f*kbuddy (a half-boyfriend). The first rule of FB-ing is to not fall in love with your FB ("Mine was the heart I never thought you would be break"). The ironic thing is that the guy was the person who finally convinced jay to stop being so cynical ("anti-misanthrope") and succeeded in opening up his heart again or whatever to a serious relationship (even if the guy wasn't actively courting him).

To put it simply: It's unrequited love from someone who didn't want to fall in love in the first place with a guy he didn't even like as a person.

And haha, I don't think some of the posters even realize that Jay Brannan is gay.

General CommentThe singer of this song is gay. He has a bestfriend, who is a girl. They've been friends for a long time, and they've been through everything together. She's helped him get through hard relationships, and he's helped her through her own stuff. They've spent months doing everything together, and they've fought and loved eachother through it all. It was like he was her half-boyfriend, because they never kissed or anything, and never even considered that they would have any feelings toward eachother. Now she's finally found a boyfriend, and she thinks she's falling in love with him, and she tells him all about it. He finally realizes that he loves her. But he doesn't want to tell her, because he knows she'll be happier this way. He's happy just being her "half-boyfriend", even if they are meant to be.
