"Girlfriend" as written by Robert James Kean, Ian Gordon Curnow and Phil Harding....
If I were to walk to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston
Well, first I'd go to the room where they keep the Cezanne
But if I had by my side a girlfriend
Then I could look through the paintings
I could look right through them
Because I'd have found something that I understand
I understand a girlfriend

That's a girl, friend
Said G-I-R-L-F-R-E-N
That's a girlfriend, baby
That's something that I understand

I walk through the Fenway, I have my heart in my hands
I understand a girlfriend

That's a girl friend
Oh, that's a G-I-R-L-F-R-E-N
Well, that's a girlfriend, baby
That's something that I understand

Four o'clock in the afternoon in the Fenway
I have my heart in my hands

I understand a girlfriend
That's a girl, friend
That's G-I-R-L-F-R-E-N
That's a girlfriend, oh, baby
Well, that's something that I understand

General CommentIt's "If I were to walk through the Museum" and "I'd have found something that I understand"

    I. Love. This. Song. The guitar solo is lovely. The imagery is charming. I love that he spells girlfriend the way he pronounces it. I love the idea of understanding love and art going together..or rather not worrying that one doesn't understand art because they now understand love. It's adorable and makes me want to go to Boston terribly.

General CommentMy favourite Modern Lovers song. I used to be your GIRLFREN at one time.. and then things changed... and got weird......but you still have space in my heart.

General CommentThis is a quibble, but "Fenway" is one word and refers to the historic baseball stadium in Boston.

General CommentThose words, "A girlfriend/that's something that I understand" - they feel like such a deep expression of love. But why? Well, because love never can be explained logically. Love is an intuitive thing, traditionally the domain of poets, but ultimately something which we all understand on a gut level. Here he has pared it down to a single common word: "Girlfriend." That's punk poetry at its best. This song really captures the feeling of how everything seems to make such simple, perfect sense when you're in love.
