The only cribs that we should care for
Are the ones that we are here for
The ones belonging to our children
That do that we do, scar from our wounds

The only cribs that make a difference
Where the magic really happens
Don't come with a Mercedes Benz
Or a wide screen showing nothing
Showing nothing...

I'm sick of home control devices
Sick of sickening home designers
Sick of drugs and gold and strip poles
Sick of homies, sick of poses

Despite the nodding staff that serves you
Despite your name on clothes and perfume
Despite the way the press observes you
You're just people...

Successful people
Dressed up people
Smiling people
Famous people
Red carpet people
Wealthy people
Important people
But still just people

So fuck the million dollar kitchen
Fuck the Al Pacino posters
Fuck the drugs, the gold, the strip poles
Fuck the homies, fuck the poses
Fuck the walls they build around them
Fuck the bedroom magic nonsense
I don't want to hear their voices
As long as they vote with their wallets

Fuck the silly "throw you out" joke
Fuck the framed cigar DeNiro smoked
Fuck their lack of originality and personality
Fuck this travesty
Fuck this new norm
Fuck conformity
Fuck their Kristal
Fuck their sordity
Fuck the way they fuck equality
Fuck their freebie gear
Fuck the ones they wear
You're just people...

Successful people
Dressed up people
Smiling people
Famous people
Red carpet people
Wealthy people
Important people
But still just people

Messed up people
Shallow people
Stupid people
Plastic people
Meta people
Theta people
Therapyople
Entropiople

Oh, fuck the ones they wear
I'm cribcaged
Cribcaged

The only cribs that we should care for
Are the ones that we are here for
The ones belonging to our children
That do what we do, scar from our wounds

This song is an attack at the commercialism that is raising our society, and how it has corrupted us into caring about our purses more thatn our children, who are the only cribs that really matter

    This song is excellent.

It's about how stupid and irratinally abusive modern society is towards itself and others. Instead of sincerely investing in the future generations and our children, society sees fit to wallow in idol worship (the obsession with actors, socialites and all those worthless people) and consumerism. Never taking the time to see the injustices and retardation going on around them, instead going with the flow that will end to hurt and screw up everything.

In addition, the end of the song, Pain of Salvation states how our children will have to mend the wounds of modern society, producing more scars. That's basically what the whole album is about, the wounds, scarring, and general abusiveness of modern society.

Quite simply one of the best songs I've ever heard. Newt pretty much nailed the meaning.

Newt nailed it. People are too busy obsessing over idols, be it humans, items, or ideas, without thinking of future generations, not even their own kids.

I also loved the tiny shout-out to their own earlier album. "Entro-people" is a reminder of the road that this band went thru to get to their level of public respect allowing them to attack the idols so directly.

Whenever I think the world has finally lost it, throw on a PoS track and it all makes sense, we nasty little creatures with nasty habits.

Love this track! As Newt has summed it up perfectly I simply add my thoughts. Reality TV, moronic 15 second personalities that have no personality, people obsessed with what others have and they want, materialistic morons craving crap that they think will make their lives somehow better. How about we try to instill some worth, common sense and consideration into our kids as we raise them? Not teach them that materialistic obsession is the key to a happy life.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the tv show Cribs. Perhaps non-Americans are not familiar with it. In the early 2000s, it was a pretty popular reality show on MTV where a camera crew would tour the home (colloquially known as a "crib") of some celebrity, usually a rapper. They were always mansions, and it was basically just a glorification of wealth and excess, as the song suggests.

The lines "fuck the bedroom magic nonsense" and "fuck the stupid throw you out joke" are pretty clear references to the show, as basically every celebrity would say "this is where the magic happens" when showing off their bedroom, and usually end the episode by jokingly kicking the crew out.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
