"Something To Believe In" as written by Matthew Hales and Kim Oliver....
You talk too much
Maybe that's your way of breaking up the silence
That fills you up but it doesn't sound the same
When no one's really listening

We stumble into our lives
Reach for a hand to hold
Any wonder we need to find
A certain something certain

Turn out the light and what are you left with
Open up my hands and find out they're empty
Press my face to the ground , I've got to find a reason
Just scratching around for something to believe in
Something to believe in

You have too much
And spending all your time collecting and discovering
It's not enough and no matter how you try
You'll never find the one you want

We stumble into our lives
Without a hand to hold
And we wonder we need to find
A certain something certain

Cut out the light and what are you left with?
Open up my hands and find out they're empty, oh
Press my face to the ground, I'm gonna find a reason
Still scratching around for something to believe in
Something to believe in

Something I can believe in
Something I can believe in, come on I need it
Something I can believe in now, come on I need it
Something I can believe in, come on I need it, ooh
Something I can believe in, come on I need it, ooh, oh

Right on, right now, right on, right now
I just need something to believe in

Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on

General CommentThis is my favorite aqualung song! Such a great build up to the end... it's so powerful. We all get to that point trying to find something to believe in.

General Commenti think this song is just about finding a purpose in life. something to believe in "when no one's really listening". Memory Man is a beautiful album.

My InterpretationTrying to find 'something to believe in' in a relationship that's clearly going nowhere.
'Turn out the light and what are you left with?' for me is like, if we take away the fact we're in a relationship, what else do we have? Do we enjoy being around each other? Do we even like each other anymore? With 'turn out the light' as 'get rid of the relationship', this makes sense to me. 'Open up my hands' is like, I've been holding onto this relationship but for what? Oh, they're empty. It's all meaningless. It's basically asking for a bit of effort on the other person's part. Alternatively, it could be looking for someone else to be their something to believe in.

General CommentI think this song is indeed about finding a purpose in life, but in my eyes it's also about finding someone to trust and rely on in the process. In the beginning, he talks about stumbling in life and needing a hand to hold. So he may have rushed into a relationship to feel security. The fact that he doesn't listen to the person he's with, possibly a woman, means she has nothing to offer to him and neither does he 'cause his hands are empty. He lost hope of finding the one he wants, but still hopes for this certain something to happen.

General CommentFirst of all, I can't believe there aren't more posts. I thought this would be one of the most popular Aqualung songs. I actually just saw it on a commercial.

This song is about how we seem to be all alone in our own lives, and we can't get anywhere in life unless we have someone with us, for someone or something whom we can believe in.

He is talking to a girl who lives a lonely, empty life, and she tries to fill her life just by talking to no one and collecting material objects. He also describes himself, who has nothing to him, and if he gets rid of his possessions he has nothing. That's why he needs something to believe in; because without something to look forward to, he is alone.

General CommentThere should be more comments on this song! It rocks, and is so catchy! I especially love the intro bit and the use of metaphor-type language devices! I first heard this song on OTH. 'Easier To Lie' is also on it. If you like this song you should definitely look at One Tree Hill music website! Rock on! :)
