General CommentThis song was first written by a troubadour called Guiraut de Bornelh, sometime around 1200 AD.
The language is Old Provençal, and the translation is:

Glorious king, truth light and clear,
Almighty God, Lord, if you please,
To my companion be a faithful aid,
For I have not seen him since the night has come,
And soon it will be dawn!

Fair companion, are you sleeping or awake?
Sleep no more, softly rouse yourself,
For in the east the star is rising,
Which brings the day, I have known it well,
And soon it will be dawn!

Fair, sweet companion, I am in so rich a place,
I have no wish for dawn nor day,
Because the noblest who is born of mother,
I hold and embrace, so I do not care for,
The jealous fool nor the dawn!
