(feat. Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park))

[Intro: Mike Shinoda]
And he never lies
And he never lies

[Lupe Fiasco:]
(uh, yea)
He just sits, and watches the people in the boxes
Everything he sees, he absorbs and adopts it
He mimics and he mocks it
And he hates the box but he cant remember how to stop it
(uh) So he continues to watch it
Hopin that it can give him somethin he can box with
Or how the locksmith seen the boxes
Locked in the box and aint got the combination to unlock it
Thats why he watches, scared to look away
Cuz at that moment it might show him what to take off the locks with
So he chained himself to the box, took a lock and then he locked it
Swallowed the combination and then forgot it
As the doctors jot it all down with they pens and pencils
The same ones that took away his voice and just left his instrumental, like damn

[Chorus Mike Shinoda:]
And he never lies
(he never lies, he never lies, uh)
And he never lies
(uh, he never lies, he never lies, no)
And he never lies
(he never lies)
Cuz he never said anything at all

[Lupe Fiasco:]
He just sits, and listens to the people in the boxes
Everything he hears, he absorbs and adopts it
Anything not comin out the box he blocks it
See he loves the box and hope they never stop it
Anything the box tell him to do, he does it
Anything it tell him to get, he shops and he cops it
He protects the box, locks it in a box when he goes to sleep
But he never sleeps
Cuz he stays up to watch it, scared to look away
Cuz at that moment it might get stolen
And thats the last of the boxes
So he chained himself to the box, took a lock and locked it
Swallowed the combination and then forgot it
As the doctors jot it all down with they pens and pencils
The same ones that took away his voice and just left his instrumental, like damn

[Chorus:]
And he never lies
(he never lies, he never lies, uh)
And he never lies
(uh, he never lies, he never lies, no)
And he never lies
(he never lies)
Cuz he never said anything at all, anything at all
(he never lies, uh)

[Interlude Lupe Fiasco:]
And you cant tell me just who you are
You by new clothes just to hide those scars
You build that roof just to hide those stars
Now you cant take it back to the start x2

[Chorus:]
And he never lies
(he never lies, he never lies, uh)
And he never lies
(uh, he never lies, he never lies, no)
And he never lies
(he never lies)
Cuz he never said anything at all, anything at all

[fading out:]
And you cant tell me just who you are
You by new clothes just to hide those scars
You build that roof just to hide those stars
Now you cant take it back to the start [x3]

General CommentWhat I get out of this song is a child who is hypmotized by watching the television. He protects it, learns from it, buys what it wants him to, and is obsessed by it. He cant turn it off and its a real problem with kids now days..

The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like men, but that men will begin to think like computers...

General CommentSo I know this is not what he is really talking about my interpratation to this song is the life of a goalkeeper. We live to be the keeper we domminate the box(aka the 18)

    But he never sleeps

this is the life of a gk we are 100% dedicated! thats what this song SCREAMS to me!

General CommentI always thought it was about being obsessed with tv - commonly known as "the idiot box" or just the "box".

So many lines make me think that.

General CommentYeah and also what the first guy said, I think a combination of the two, maybe with the tv being like the cause of his personal problems or maybe somethign he goes to to ease them.

General CommentThis song to me is about a person lying to himself about who he truly is. The box could be a tv but i think it's just more of a metaphorical thing about people locking themselves in a box and being happy and content with what they have. Just sitting in their safe place of nothing new nothing changed. In the beginning he is young he starts out mimicking the people to fit in but he slowly forgets how to stop it. At first e never looks away from the box because he is scared that he might like not fitting in. Anything that society and popularity tells him to do he shops and he cops it. He is a person that has no voice that has no soul he is just out there doing whatever he feels like will help him fit in. His box grows into an obsession he never sleeps because he would hate to look away for just one moment to see all his popularity fall away. He would give up being happy for just one moment to watch that box and make sure it doesn't get rattled. Best part of the song right here.
"And you cant tell me just who you are
You by new clothes just to hide those scars
You build that roof just to hide those stars
Now you cant take it back to the start x2 "
He has built up on top of so much of what he is that he doesn't even know who he is. He's out buying clothes to hide pain he is going through materialistic items to shadow his dreams of the stars and achieving something. This is a person that has thrown away everything they once where to be someone they never wanted to be. At the end he can't tell anybody who he is or what sets him apart or even what he wants and by the time he realizes it it's too late to change it and go back to the start.

Nichole i really like your interp even though it has nothing to do with the song lmao. I mean to you but yeah lol. I actually first heard this song on a soccer video so it made me lol. I really don't like too much rap but this song is good.

General CommentWhen i first heard this song, i immediately thought about the book 1984, and when Stalin controlled Russia. I think this song is about propaganda, and how it can completely take ur ability to reason and think for yourself, sort of like communism. In the first verse, the boy watches the box for a way to turn it off, and to unlock whatever keeps him there. In the second verse however, he watches it because he enjoys watching it, and wants to do whatever it tells him to do. Another thing that made me think of Stalin/1984 was the chourus. It sounds like Mike is tryin to smoothly persuade whoever is watching this box that the box never lies. And this parallels to Stalin/1984 in the fact that the Party was Always right, and you should accept everything they say. But kudos to lupe, he always makes songs with true meaning.

General Commenti think it's about a person who is popular/well-liked, but they gained that status by adopting a personality which is different from his own. he has forgotten who he used to be and wishes that he could once again be the person he once was. but he does not want to give up his popularity. the box is where he put his old personality and basically is all the new trends and accessories that people buy so they can seem cool. it's probably also a statement against celebrities who try too hard to appear cool but lose the sense of who they really are in doing so.

General CommentI think he's talking about people who think inside the box. The people who believe what they're taught...what they're told. What we're told in the world is that we go to war for terrorism, Lupe believes we go for oil. We're taught columbus was a great man. I'm sure Lupe knows Columbus was a fucking scum bag dirt bag heartless greedy piece of shit with a vision built from sheer ignorance and an idea. But we celebrate him. We're taught he found America and we make light of 250k Indians killed and enslaved. I can go on and on and on and on. But the fact is, the normal people "in the box" who think "in the box" and learn "in the box" believes the half truths and propaganda we're fed. And Lupe chains himself to the box to try and figure out a way to free other people. But he starts to enjoy what the people in the box enjoy. How they have happiness in life through ignorance. Even if he knows, he likes to have fun even more. Kind of like how he listened to hip hop although he "despised it". I havn't read every part of this song but from what I've heard and the first 2 verses I've read, it maintains my said path.

On short time though. God damn...such a great song and 9 comments. Damn where was in in 07. Fuck.
