This chick goes to school in her brand new Benz
It's filled with her friends but when the day ends it's colder
She just found out her parents' marriage is over
She's supposed to understand when she's older
At least that's what her parents told her
But now she's going off on them because they can't scold her
There's tears in her eyes
She yells and she cries
Her world tumbles down and she wishes to die
She has to comply when her life's gone awry
So she turns to her mom, looks her in the eye
How could you push him away?
Please mom, make him stay
We'll wake up tomorrow, it will be a new day
You can try to work it out, he don't have to bounce
Not an ounce of respect left deaf to her parent's tongue
This sitch ain't gonna be fun
She's done, had enough
Coping with this is 'bout to be tough

[Chorus]
One young girl
And she's caught outside
In the cold
Scared to the bone
But trying to be bold
But when she wakes up she's all alone
In a broken home

Two months later, she's got miles on her car
From going out to her dad's cause he lives so far
And her mom's crying cause she ain't got the first check
They're about to lose the house but this chick would bet
That if her mom would just stop boozing and using
Then they would stop losing everything that they had
But she's so mad, so angry and sad
And she wants more than anything to live with her dad
But her dad's generous with twenty-four grand a year
And her mom has the nerve to shed one tear
So she stands up eye to eye, watches her mom cry
And lets out all the feelings inside
She yells, "Yo trick, stop crying like you dying
Stop trying to make me feel bad for you
After all the drama me and my brother went through
You have the nerve to carry on like you do?
You act like a child and I'm your mother
So girl, get up and go take care of my brother
Stop yelling at me cause you ain't got no excuse
And I'm never gonna feel sorry for you

[Chorus]

Now you've seen my life and you've seen what I'm about
And I doubt even now you could figure me out
Just because I don't have love don't feel for me
Do what you have to do to write your own love story

[Chorus]

Alright. For me, this song's really straightforward - The girl's parents split up, and a ton of bad things are coming out of it, and she thinks that everything would've been better had her parents stayed together.

I kinda know how she feels; my parents split up recently, and it hurts... but anyway. That's my two cents.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Blink-182
This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
