Oh, this road is long, this road is wide,
It takes more than luck to last the ride,
It takes strength and it takes courage to survive,
And did someone ever say to you,
"There's nothing bound in thought you cannot do?"
Well, I've seen some things but not all of them came true.

So I don't want to be the last, I don't want to be the first,
Don't want to be alone with my thoughts tomorrow,
And I don't want to be afraid, don't want to look away,
I'm learning to breathe,
No I don't want to be the last, I don't want to be the first,
I just need a hope and a light to follow,
Like sailors look to stars to find their way home,
I'm learning to breathe on my own.

And I know a man who lost his wife,
This is the way he chooses to describe his life,
He says, "If I think too much, I find there's just a hole,"
But before she went, she left a son,
He says, "Dad, you're not the only one,
Maybe love is just a requiem for the soul..."

Oh, do you still feel small?
Just a speck of life on an ocean wave,
Does it pull us all?
Does it pull us all?

So I don't want to be the last, I don't want to be the first,
Don't want to be alone with my thoughts tomorrow,
And I don't want to be afraid, don't want to look away,
I'm learning to breathe,
No I don't want to be the last, I don't want to be the first,
I just need a hope and a light to follow,
Like sailors look to stars to find their way home,
I'm learning to breathe on my own.

General CommentIt's a very deep song, i think it means about learning to share whats on your mind and not to bottle it all up. To talk to other people as there will always be other people with similar problems, you're not on your own. Stop worrying so much and enjoy life.

General CommentThis was the song that first got me hooked on Nerina Pallot; every time I listen to it it blows me away the same way it did the first time I heard it.

I think it's full of mixed emotions...a sense of hope and an encouragement to keep moving forward, like foxufmu said. Yet there's also a sense of...regret? I don't know. The way she sings about the man who lost his wife and that love is just a requiem for the soul.

Also if you listen carefully in the background of the chorus there are voices singing something along the lines of "find your dreams/come true but/the one thing/I can't do".

I think the general idea of the song is that she's conceding that even though life and love can be painful sometimes, there's always something to live for and we should keep pressing on. (:
