My man don't treat me right
Don't kiss me sweet goodnight
Don't buy me flowers to smell
Why he's a rotten boy from hell?

My man don't treat me good
He eats all my food
And he leaves me such a mess
They say I'm cursed but I am blessed

'Cause he loves me, he loves me, he really, really loves me
And his eyes are bluer then the bluest sky above the city
He don't agree but what a pity
He love me yes he does

My man don't treat me sweet
He walks the empty streets
And he drinks and smokes and swears
And they say he doesn't care

My man, he breaks my heart
He tears me all apart
And he leaves me such a mess
They say I'm cured but I am blessed

'Cause he loves me, he loves me, he really, really loves me
And his eyes are bluer then the bluest sky above the city
He don't agree but what a pity
He love me yes he does

Oh, my man, I love him so, he?ll never know
All my life is just despair but I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, alright

What's the difference if I say, "I'll go away?"
When I know ill come back on my knees someday
For whatever my man is
I'm his, forever more

    My Interpretation

I think this song is a comment on those "I love my man no matter how bad he treats me" kind of songs that billie holliday and others used to sing. In the chorus ('he loves me, he loves me, he really really loves me') has a definite parodic sound when it is sung, as though she is suggesting that these women are really stupid for staying with men who abuse them in this way. If love hurts this much, it's not love. I don't see Regina encouraging love for someone who "don't treat me right".

I never know how to feel about this song...

Sometimes I think that it applies to everyone.
"And he leaves me such a mess They say I'm cursed, but I am blessed"

Haven't we all felt this way before? Yea our lovers do things to piss us off, but we always come back on our knees because above all, they love us and we love them.

That's what it means to me anyway :)

i just love this song so much... because i really love billie holiday's version as well and to have regina's style blended with billie's is what makes this song such a treat. i have to agree with kellybeans haven't we all felt this way. also love is such a hard thing to find we cling to it despite it's uncaring package and the way it hurts.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
