D for effort
D for intent
D because you pay the rent

D for love
D for insight
D because you're heaven sent

I want you to need me - not to feed me
I want you to need me - not to feed me

D for dishes
F for floors
Can't make the grade anymore

D for love
D for intent
D because you pay the rent

You kick my head
Lying on your ten - your ten foot bed
You say you're all alone, that's just 'cause, you don't want anybody home
See a smile, make it sad
Take it all so bad.

General CommentIt's about two people who live in an Apartment, and the guy (from the guy's perspective) is broke, the woman has the job, has the money. They barely get by. He wanted to help her, but ended up loosing his job or whatever income he had, so she ended up helping him instead. She grows reluctant and pushes him away, that is where this sad story ends.

Song MeaningI think that the letters could refer to a schook mark, as he says "Can't make the grade anymore", but I'm not american so I don't know about these things very much, could I be right?

General Commenttatsu101, I think you are right. I've always understood this song to be a play on the saying "A for effort," meaning you didn't succeed, but at least you tried (and it is based on the school grading system).

This guy is in such a bad way, he can't even get the "A for effort," he gets a D. "Can't make the grade anymore" only seems to reinforce that this is a play on the familiar phrase, spiked with typical Codeine misery.

General CommentIve been in relationships where the guy has drug problems and i am the one with the job and the money they borrow and i pay rent. And the guy becomes really dependent on that and doesnt try and just feeds his habit "i want you to need me not to feed me" that hit hard with me because i would want so bad to take care of him in every way but it creates a lot of resentment and is overall very unhealthy. D for dependency and 10 foot bed is probably like saying your high horse. Shes alone cause she feels like shes the only one putting in effort but he just needs a chance and he may feel like she doesn't believe in him enough to give him that chance "you dont want anybody home". I could be wrong but i relate very much
