If it’s good to complicate than both of us are doing fine.
Just keep your eyes on your part & leave me alone to mine.
If it’s good to instigate than we’re fast horse, bet on us.
I’m not calling you an animal I think we just fight too much.
C'mon, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine
even diamonds start as coal.
We’re both aligned in framed of mind but circumstance has got us good.
& now you’re seeing a side of me I wished no one ever would.
Yeah, if it’s right to pick a fight, we’re fingers in a sugar bowl.
Love isn’t perfect, even diamonds start out as coal.
Come on, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine
even diamonds start as coal.
Even diamonds start as coal.
We’re incomplete & infantine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give it time girl, the fire feels divine.
The sweetest things they burn before they shine.
We think way too much
look at us losing touch!
A promise is a promise until…
Yeah, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds starts as coal.
Even diamonds start as coal.
We’re incomplete & infantine
even diamonds start as coal.

General Comment"If it’s good to instigate than we’re a fast horse, bet on us.

These lines are awesome, Brandon Boyd shows that even a simple conversation can turn into an arguement.

But I think the meaning of the song is pretty straightforward, it's about a some people in a relationship who fight too much. Boyd makes the metaphor that their relationship is like coal that will later turn into a diamond.

"Give it time girl, the fire feels divine.
The sweetest things they burn before they shine."
    - this means that their relationship will be strengthened by the fighting. every couple fights, but over time their relationship will become strong and beautiful like a diamond.

I know I explained it in a pretty corny way, sorry.

General CommentDon't feel your explained it in a corny way. I truly know what you're talking about!

I agree. It seems a lot of the album has reoccuring themes about realistic love, as opposed to publicized, idealistic love. Nothing is guarenteed, and nothing is ever perfect. Even love. (In my opinion, of course.)

General Comment... It does sound a bit like something a boy band would pump out, if ony for the "diamonds start as coal" lyrics.

General Commentthis song is pretty easy to understand... he's telling his girlfriend to not give up on them because the relationship will just get better with time... "love isn't perfect, even diamonds start out as coal." it's a beautiful metaphor. i love it.

and for those of you who think it isn't a good line, you don't know what you are talking about... brandon uses perfect metaphors... and this just like the others is a perfect metaphor... it makes perfect sense.

General Commentgustava1986 pretty much nailed it. hehehe.

he pertains to fire as the relationship being a mess in the beginning, but says that it will get better if they give it some time.
