Kate, it's your ride
Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle
Pretend
You're God and grow, and it's your day to wed

We found your man
He's drinking up, he's all-American
And he'll drive
He's volunteered with grace to end your life

We'll tidy up
It's sad to hold, but leave your shell to us
You explode
You firefly, you tiny boat, with oars

Feather oars
The world tilts back and pours and pours and so
You satellite
You tidal wave, you're a big surprise

And I've one more night
To be your mother

The signal interrupts
My baby's frequency, not strong enough
Remain in my hands and smile
We will miss you, but in time you'll get set up
And we will write

Hey, beauty supreme
Yeah, you were right about me
But can I get myself out from underneath
This guilt that will crush me?

And in the choir
I saw our sad Messiah
He was bored and tired of my laments
Said, "I died for you one time, but never again"

Never again, never again, never again, never again
Never again, never again, never again, never again

Well, I love you so much (Never again)
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply (Never again)
No, 'cause I can dish it out (Never again)
But I can't take it (Never again) - 2x

One will love you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Two will love you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Three will love you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Four will love you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Five will love you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Six will love you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Seven loves you so much
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply
'Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

Seven loves you so much (We'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth)
But do me a favor, baby, don't reply (We'll never have to rot together underneath the dirt)
'Cause I can dish it out (I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd)
But I can't take it (I should be laughing right now) - 3x

in the words of jesse lacey...

"there was a 6 year old girl who was returning from a wedding on a road on long island which is about a mile away from my house. and uh, it was late that night and there were two limousines following each other and the younger girl was in the front limousine, and her mother and family were in the rear limousine. some kid, some long island over-privilaged white kid had a fight with his girlfriend and decided he would tie one on. so he got in his car and got on the exit ramp of a highway, and was speeding down the wrong way of the highway. he didn't even see this limousine coming at him, didn't hit the breaks, he just hit the limousine head on. the little girl katie flynn was decapitated, the limo driver was killed instantly. the limousine that was behind stopped, the mother got out and ran to see whether she could find her daughter and she found her daughter's head laying in the middle of the highway. so she picked it up and she sat on the side of the curb with her daughters head on her lap while the rescue workers cut her daughters body out of the limo. she went on tv a day later and explained this story in detail to the public, and it just brought my life to a hault."

this is the true and exact story/meaning to the song

Who the hell edited these lyrics? They were spot on before, now they are wrong in several places and written in terrible english.

Correct lyrics: (from old BN website, and lyric sheet that came with the vinyl)

'K', here's your ride Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle Pretend you are God, and grow And that it's your day to wed We have found your man He is drinking up He's all-American, and he'll drive He has volunteered with grace to end your life We'll tidy up It's sad to hold, but leave your shell to us You explode, you firefly, you tiny boat with oars Feather oars The world tilts back and pours and pours And so, you satellite You're a tidal wave You’re a big surprise And I've one more night to be your mother"

The signal interrupted My baby's frequency not strong enough Remain in my hands and smile

We will miss you but in time you'll get set up And we will write

Hey, you beauty supreme Yeah, you were right about me But can I get myself out from underneath This guilt that will crush me In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah He was bored and tired of my laments He said, "I died for you one time, but never again"

    Never again...

Well I love you so much But do me a favor baby and don’t reply Cause I can dish it out But I can't take it

This song is 100% centered around the death of seven year old Katie Flynn but I think the intent is to rope the listener in to how death affects both the family of the deceased and those (who are or who feel) at fault.

Here's a link to an article describing the incident: nytimes.com/2005/07/05/nyregion/05crash.html

So now, we know Katie was a flower girl at the wedding she had attended. Odd that they say he's volunteered with grace to end your life. Though they do likely mean to use grace as a word, grace was the other flower child at the weddings name, she survived the crash. The first half of the song (and many of the songs on this album) appear to be told from the mothers perspective. As though observing a court trial, most of these songs take you through the emotional journey that Katies mother is going through, as well the journey that her murderer Martin Heidgen is going through after drunkenly killing her.

Here's some of her moms perspective.

"K, here's your ride. Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle Pretend you garden grows, And it's your own day to wed We've found your man. He's drinking up. He's all-American, and he'll drive. He's volunteered with grace to end your life"

And then we have Martins, it sounds almost like he's contemplating suicide.

"Hey, you beauty supreme Yeah, you were right about me But can I get myself out from underneath This guilt that will crush me In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah He was bored and tired of my laments He said, "I died for you one time, but never again""

In the end I think that it's either Katies mom saying that Katie is in a safe place or that it's showing how this death has changed Martins view of life love and death (telling someone not to love him because he doesn't deserve it, stating that he'll never be loved or have children and never have to suffer a loss like Katies mother did).

"Well I love you so much, but do me a favor baby and don't reply Cause I can dish it out, but I can't take it I'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth We'll never have to rot together underneath dirt I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd I should be laughing right now"

I actually learnt what this song meant yesterday. Its about this little girl who was a flower girl at her aunties wedding. And after the family was riding in a limo, and they were hit by a drunk driver. And out of the 3 kids, mom and dad, the little girl got decapitated in the accident. The mother found her daughters head..and hugged it for an hour while waiting for the ambulance to come..the rest of the family had minor injuries, and she was the only one to pass away. Sad story ;/// But its true. And these guys wrote this song because they grew up in the same hometown as the family.

after reading the story of kate's death and watching the limo crash video, this is my perspective on

    the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 loved you so much, but do me a favor baby don't reply

it has to be from the point of view of the devil. he's talking to the seven deadly sins, which he obviously loves. however, after kate's tragic death he actually feels remorse. that is why he says he can dish it out, but can't take it.

look at the underlines at the end: the devil never "has to be down to earth" (actually feel the feelings he inflicts)

never "has to live together on this piece of dirt" (live on the earth with the sins he invokes)

doesn't have to "find his baby in the crowd" (search for his decapitated daughter's head)

and the devil "should be laughing right now", but instead he feels remorse for the unrightful death.

    just a thought

Get your petals out, lay them in the isle

    They signal to interrupt

We will write (breathe in) So breathe Yeah, you were right about me

    Just some spelling fixes...

I was almost sure the end said 'I should be locked up right now'...but I do hear it as laughing, which is surely right. I thought it was better when I heard 'locked up'. :/

Just FYI for any more posts to come, the song is based on an awfully sad and true story about the death of a 7 year old girl (and the limousine driver) by a drunk driver whilst she was inside the limousine, as flower girl for a wedding. Hence all the references to the number 7 etc. It makes sense when you know the story. Look it up.

Okay, I wanted to let all of you know the real meaning of this really sad song.

It is about a 7 year old girl named Katie Flynn.

She was the flower girl in her aunts wedding and was killed on their way home after the wedding, July 1, 2005. A drunk driver crashed head on into their limo after driving two miles the wrong way on the Meadowbrook Parkway. The limo driver Stan Rabinowitz was also killed.

Stan was killed on impact, Katie was decapitated. Katie’s mother sat on the side of the high way cradling her daughters severed head.

If you don’t see how this song was a tribute to Katie and her family and a poster against drunk driving, I don’t know what to tell you. Brand New is from Long Island, NY and clearly as a local band was affected and moved by their story.

Listen to this song with this story in mind and I hope you’ll understand.

Hobbyy I disagree with you completely... And It's a different sound just as YFW and Deja were tremendously different but both amazing. You haven't even heard the entire new CD so maybe you should wait to judge it until you've actually heard it? just a thought...

I think the seven's at the end are something different. notice that its said four times, but really theres only 3 seven related verses (the first one is said to times). three 7's....777...is the number of god. The devil and GOD are raging inside me.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
