"Star of Wonder" as written by and Sufjan Stevens....
I call you
From the comet's cradle
I found you
Trembling by yourself
When the night falls
Lightly on your right-wing shoulder
Wonderful know-it-all
Slightly where the night gets colder

Oh, conscience,
Where will you carry me?
I found you
Star of terrifying effigies
When the night falls
I carry myself to the fortress
Of your glorious cost
Oh, I may seek your fortress

When the night falls
We see the star of wonder
Wonderful night falls
We see you
We see you

I see the stars coming down there
Coming down there to the yard
I see the stars coming down there
Coming down there to my heart
[Repeat x 10]

I see the stars coming down there
Coming down there to the yard

These days, days, days run away
Like horses over the hills

General CommentThis is the best song from songs for christmas. It has the very beautiful melodies and the drawn out ending is so good. As for lyrical meaning I have no clue...

General Comment"star of terrifying effigies" breaks me open. this song is all about awe and terror. we are made vulnerable with God in the incarnation. that's a kind of intuitive leap interpretation. i can't explain it right now.

by the way, the songbook that comes with the CDs has the lyrics and the line should be "your glorious cost," which i think reframes that verse some...

General Commentthe most amazing song on this set by far
    one of sufie's best ever

when it does that huge, fast crescendo to bring in "I see the stars"... kills me every time.

General Commenti can just make out a different part being sung in the background of that beautiful anthemic ending. can't hear it clearly enough to make out the words--anyone know what they're singing?

General CommentThe background part at the end is: "These days, days, days run away /
Like horses over the hills". Methinks it's a Charles Bukowski reference.

I agree that this song is sublime. I would guess it is a metaphorical description both Christ's incarnation on that first Christmas, and of God's nearness to the believer.

Of course, the star in the title is a reference to the star which led the Magi to the young Jesus.
