"February Song" as written by Josh Groban, Marius De Vries and John Ondrasik....
Where has that old friend gone
Lost in a February song
Tell him it won't be long
'Til he opens his eyes
Opens his eyes
Where is that simple day
Before colors broke into shades
And how did I ever fade
Into this life
Into this life

And I never want to let you down
Forgive me if I slip away
And all that I've known is lost and found
I promise you I
I'll come back to you one day

Morning is waking up
Sometimes it's more than just enough
And all that you need to love
Is in front of your eyes
It's in front of your eyes

And I never want to let you down
Forgive me if I slip away
Sometimes it's hard to find my ground
'Cause I keep on falling as I try to get away
From this crazy world

And I never want to let you down
Forgive me if I slip away
And all I've known is lost and found
I promise you I
I'll come back to you one day

Where has that old friend gone
Lost in a February song
Tell him it won't be long
'Til he opens his eyes
Opens his eyes

General CommentThis is a song that was really relatable to me as I was going through a rebellious period in my youth. Because of decisions I'd made, things were no longer as simple as they had been before I chose not to listen to those who loved me. As the song progresses, the person learns that 'morning is waking up'...meaning they've come to their senses 'opening their eyes,' realizing finally that what they thought they were missing was 'in front of their eyes' all along. But its not easy to go back to how it was: ('its hard to find my ground/'cause I keep on falling/ as I try to get away from this crazy world') Wonderful song (& singer)!

General CommentThis is one of my favorite songs ever. I watched a Josh Groban interview a while back and he was talking about this song. He said it's about a time in his life (during February) when things were changing. He'd finished touring, his relationship with his girlfriend had ended, and so he wrote this song about himself. I think it's about someone being lost, but letting their friends know that he's alright, and he will "come back one day."
The songs that he writes himself are always my favorites. His voice is one of the greatest I've ever heard.

My InterpretationThe character in this song is someone who has lost sight of who he is, who he wants to be, and what's important to him. Ive always wondered what the significance of the phrase 'February Song' meant. I think it could mean that maybe February was the point in his life when he got 'lost'.

He is hopeful that one day, he will be able to move past the hurt, and 'open his eyes', and he wants his loved ones to know that one day, he will move past this and come back to them.

He wants to return to the days when he didn't have to worry about the cruelty of the world, when it was painted in solid colours, when it were either one or the other.

Again, he's not happy with where he is in life.

He wants his loved ones to konw that he he is facing a dark time, and asks forgiveness for being distant from them. He again promises that he will get better with time.

He says that he treasures the simple things in life, that he doesn't need anything more than what he's got, that what he 'needs to love' is right there with him - possibly just his loved ones. It links back to 'colours breaking into shades'. He only wants simplicity.

Again, he asks forgiveness for 'slipping away'. He elaborates that he finds it hard to 'find his ground', possibly relating back to being lost - he's trying to find his place in the world. But he then says he 'keeps on falling as he tries to get away from this crazy world'.

Once again, he does not like that the world is now so complicated, and all he wants to do is get away, but can't.

Again, he promises that he will find himself and come back to his loved ones. The song ends the same way as it began, with him telling hi loved ones that he is lost in a 'February Song', but promises that he will come out of it eventually.

This use of third person could possibly be interpreted as a way of distancing himself from the person he doesn't want to be.

Anyway, that's my take on the beautiful 'February Song'. It's one that's really close to my heart.

General CommentBeautiful song. I think this person lost himself... lost sight of what is important to him. And he's realized that he's at a point in his life where he doesn't want to be.

General CommentI think this song covers a lot of emotions. I think he has kind of let his life pass him by and has been just going through the motions. He realizes he doesn't really know who he is or what he wants to do and needs to take time to figure it out. I think he's saying that as much as he loves someone else, he has to find who he is first and once he does, he can completely love someone else...just my interpretation but this song is AMAZING.

General CommentIt seems to me like it could be about fame, and how it's completely crazy and people so easily slip away from their friends and family... lose sight of what's real.

Song MeaningPhreakyphan and Carrie elfin689 you have hit on the truth, but it is not the whole truth, Carrie you had the great advantage of the live interview. But as interviews go, they are made for television or radio. Controlled revelation. It's reveling but not all, yet quite simple is the answer. This song is more than what is about Mr. Groban. Still it is intimately about him.
Josh Groban is somewhat of a visionary, ushered into stardom that he was not seeking it, as a replacement for an Opera singer who had become ill. February song takes us back there to the time he was not a star but a gifted young man available for discovery. Josh being born on February 27 as Joshua Winslow Groban, is aware of some of his giftedness which has also has opened his eyes to the world through different lenses than many of us, but it's a pure, simply free, unobstructed, uncommited, time in his life.
Then years later in his career as Carrie elfin689 points out, a relationship that has ended is not just a personal one but a worldwide relationship as well. The personal affected the public. It goes deep deep into the longings of man with his purpose, his relationships, and himself. This is not just about his past but his future and the search for it. Josh is inviting you to come with him in this search in his heart: "Where has that old friend gone - Lost in a February song" This is Josh's call to you his listener.
"Tell him it won't be long - 'Till he opens his eyes - Opens his eyes" In this seemingly out of place line, reveals the depth to which he was longing with emotional investment that he will find that lost treasure of simply being himself before the loss. It is so gripping that he is asking you the listener to tell him, tell him it will not be long, because some of you he has met along the way in his travels he has seen the devestated with consolation and many needing it. It is also his need as you gently enter with him in this search, to hear the lost confidence to come from someone else, as a friend offering warmth in the cold of February. Hope is a part of Josh's life, and the open eye is the one he sees as projected in time, the reality of receiving the treasure, just as he has given the hope apparently.
Truely this is an ingeneous song.
"Where is that simple day - Before colors broke into shades - And how did I ever fade - Into this life - Into this life." As I said in a way before, there is a conection he makes with the simple life he had before and the broken and sinking one he feels he is in at this moment in time. But it is much more than that. It is about all of you who he shares with. "Into this life" is our que to look at this life. He does not want you to hurt like he hurts but we all have our triggers that cause our own slipping in relationship and in the beating hearts will stop. This is the place where forgiveness is needed to be confirmed before it is too late.
"And I never want to let you down - Forgive me if I slip away - And all that I've known is lost and found - I promise you I - I'll come back to you one day"
Now the person is reminded that the end is not forever an end, but can be and will be prophetically recommited, it's a promise. But the journey is not a stopping of life. The colours of life return with the next morning that comes with portions you realize was enough to begin with. That simple day where all that you need to love is in front of your eyes. What a crazy world we live in and we paritcipate in it and repeat these phrases in phases.
Where has that old friend gone
