Da da da da
The smell of your skin lingers on me now
You're probably on your flight back to your hometown
I need some shelter of my own protection, baby
Be with myself and center
Clarity, peace, serenity

I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry

Don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry

The path that I'm walking
I must go alone
I must take the baby steps 'til I'm full grown, full grown
Fairy tales don't always have a happy ending, do they?
And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay

I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry

Like the little school mate in the school yard
We'll play jacks and Uno cards
I'll be your best friend, and you'll be mine
Valentine
Yes, you can hold my hand if you want to
'Cause I wanna hold yours too
We'll be playmates and lovers, and share our secret worlds
But it's time for me to go home
It's getting late and dark outside
I need to be with myself and center
Clarity, peace, serenity

I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry

Don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry

La da da da da da

I think these are all really good interpretations but to me i think shes saying, i love you but i need my space. she says she needs to sort herself out and anyone who has been in a serious relationship would know that its hard to connect with a person and give them all of you if you feel out of tune with yourself.

she says it doesnt have anything to do with him, which to me means it doesnt mean there breaking up. i think shes just saying she needs a break from the relationship. the song goes on further to say that he can hold her hand because she wants to hold his to, meaning the relationship or bond is not over.

I think the true meaning of this song is needing some space, time out, because when you're not a whole you can't be someone else's compliment :D

In order to love someone, you must love you first.

Basically that's it, and the song reflects that the wise thing to do is perform this search on your own and not involving someone (that was already there) so saying goodbye is hard but fair for that other person.

    Until you get together.

I'm just like that right now.

    Good song

There's only one line that I listen to before I change the radio to something else.

I'm guessing this is what my ex was trying to warn me about - "And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay."

She was right. We ended up going out again but honestly it would've been better if I actually really listened to what she had said. The point was for her not to regret me the first time we broke up; she thought at that time that if we got back together she would regret it forever.

    She was right.

The second break-up came and I being an arrogant asshole did things my way. I took her for granted. I regret losing her forever.

This song is about her journey to rid her self of her addiction and doing it by herself. If you didn't already know, Fergie was a HUGE heroin addict. So, I think it's about her getting clean by herself. :)

    To Me:

Its like you've just broken up with someone and your remembering what they were like. Then Fergie sings about shelter and clarity - so she needs some time to figure out what it is she wants and needs.

Big Girls Dont Cry - Mature and grown up she still feels like a child especially alone and scared but its something that she needs to do and reminding herself that "the path I am walking I must go alone, I must take Baby steps until Im full grown"- She will start slowly but surely, its something she needs to do .

The person that left, she will miss but its not just for her its for him. Maybe she knew this person for a long time and she states that they are like school mates, which obviously states that things are so much harder than when you meet a young boy in the playground things are so much simpler when your a child.

A song about the forces that comes to bear on young love (sounds like a first love), the decision to break up to develop into a big girl (that doesn't cry) of the world, to take that personal journey; "I must go alone, I must take the baby steps till I'm full grown, full grown". She explains to her love that he is not to blame, it's not his fault; "I hope you know, I hope you know, That this has nothing to do with you". "And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket" because the love remains, it's about outside forces which can't be ignored. The journey is necessary to avoid the hurt of a sweet love becoming destroyed; "Fairy tales don't always have a happy ending do they, And I forsee the dark ahead if I stay". PS. (for Shirley) But if you are really lucky, the prize is that you get to find that person again after resolution, and feel the value of the rarest thing... perfect love.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
