"The Animals Were Gone" as written by and Damien George Rice....
Woke up and for the first time the animals were gone
It's left this house empty now, not sure if I belong
Yesterday you asked me to write you a pleasant song
I'll do my best now but you've been gone now for so long

The window's open now and the winter settles in
We'll call it Christmas when the adverts begin
I love your depression and I love your double chin
I love most everything you bring to this offering

Oh I know that I've left you in places of despair
Oh I know that I love you so please throw down your hair

At night I dream without you
And hope I don't wake up
Cause waking up without you
Is like drinking from an empty cup

Woke up and for the first time the animals were gone
Our clocks are ticking now so before our time is gone
We can get a house and some boxes on the lawn
We can make babies and accidental songs

I know I've been a liar and I know I've been a fool
I hope we didn't break it but I'm glad we broke the rules
My cave is deep now yet your light is shining through
I cover my eyes, still all I see is you

Oh I know I've left you in places of despair
Oh I know that I love you so please throw down your hair

At night I dream without you
And hope I don't wake up
Cause waking up without you
Is like drinking from an empty cup

    General Commenthe fucked up.
    he wants her back.
and he'd rather not wake up at all
if he can't wake up next to her.
    amazing song.

General CommentI know a lot of songs aren't meant to be taken literally but I'm suprised everyone seems to be taking the animals figuratively. I think it quite literally means that his ex left probably a few days ago & she is still in the process of getting all of her stuff out of the place & she finally took their pets home last night. Now she is gone and all her stuff is gone and the last sign of life besides himself--the animals---are gone and he feels so freaking alone in his house & nothing feels right. When someone breaks up with you, (especially a long relationship like this one) & you still want to be with them, it takes so long for it to sink in that you are not together & you're not going to win them back. The chorus alone is just such a brilliant way to express all that, don't get me started on the verses....to dream about someone each night & then wake up & know that they may never, ever, in your whole life be next to you again is the worst feeling EVER. God, this is the most intense song ever created.

General CommentThis song is just a brilliant modern day love song. He realises that she's not perfect yet he loves her anyway- "I love your depression and I love your double chin".
He has hurt her in the past ("I've left you in places of despair", "I know i've been a liar and I know i've been a fool") but loves her beneath this.
"Please throw down your hair" refers to the fairytale of Rapunzel- he wants to save her from her current state of depression.

General CommentI think the words are "We can get a house and some BOXERS on the lawn". Boxers are a British breed of dog.

"waking up without you is like drinking from an empty cup"
    wow.

but it most certainly is "boxers" not "boxes"

General Commentactually, it's "trip," not "dream" throughout.

General CommentI interpret it as our despairing male character, who never appreciated what he had while with his lover, suddenly wanting her back at her departure.

Having woken up to an empty bed, he notes that "the animals were gone". I think Damien's trying to convey that the animals represent happiness. When someone is happy, they appreciate the beauty of nature all around them. The beautiful animals that poetically represented his joy were no longer around.

And he REALLY wants her back. He begins promising her the stereotypical happy family - the "house and some boxers on the lawn". He promises her that all of the little things that caused them to grow apart - her depression and her gining weight - don't matter anymore, because he's realised how much he loves her.

Beautiful song, and I especially love the Damien-esque closing.
