"I'm Coming Out" as written by and Bernard/rodgers Edwards....
I'm coming out
I'm coming
I'm coming out

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

There's a new me coming out
And I just had to live
And I want to give
I'm completely positive
I think this time around
I am gonna do it
Like you never do it
Like you never knew it
Oh, I'll make it through

The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
I have to shout
That I'm coming out

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

I've got to show the world
All that I want to be
And all my billities
There's so much more to me
Somehow, I have to make them
Just understand
I got it well in hand
And, oh, how I've planned
I'm spreadin' love
There's no need to fear
And I just feel so glad
Every time I hear

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

General CommentThis song is not necessarily about being gay, just in general being yourself and not being afraid to let people know. It applies to LGBT, but also to anyone who has felt shy, embarrassed, self-conscious, etc.

The single is 3:55, but the LP version is closer to 7 minutes long. The drum intro on the extended track are amazing. It's also one of the few songs that features a trombone solo.. which also sounds amazing.

General CommentI don't think it's about coming out from the closet (aka, she's gay)
but I think it's about she wants to be herself, not what people want her to be,
she wants to act they way she feels, and not a slave of people's eyes....

General CommentThis song is NOT about being gay. Please consider the year this song was released, the societal climate under which it was released, the fact that she is an African American and the that culture's past view on homosexuality )which was much more negative than that of the caucasian culture), and the probability that 'coming out" can be used to describe coming to life, etc. I've always loved the song. It's simple, but it's upbeat. It's an athem telling the world that I'm back, I'm alive, I'm gonna live life to the fullest, and ain't nobody gonna stop me! It's also a slap in the face to anyone who believes otherwise.

General Commenti think it could be argued that this is about being gay, not saying it cant be either. This song came out 1980, the period after the 1970s disco gave representation to both gay and lesbian communities. The 60s and 70s american society under went a irrevocable reconfiguration of identity with the sexual self central to this shift and that carried on into the 80s.
