Dein Herz schlägt
am Abgrund
Die Nacht umhüllt
dein letztes Wort
So grausam
So achtlos
reißt dich das Schicksal
von mir fort

Ich lass dich los
Muss mich befrein
denn meine Sehnsucht
holt mich ein
Auf ewig dein

Verzeih mir — bleib bei mir
und ich sagte noch Vergissmeinnicht
Ich schenk dir zum Abschied
ein letztes Licht
Vergissmeinnicht

Dein Blick sinkt
ins Nachtrot
Ich reiß mich los
mit letzter Kraft
So grausam
So heilig
liegst du vor mir
Es ist vollbracht

Diesmal wird es für immer sein
Auch diese Wunde wird verheiln
Ich reiß mich los muss mich befrein
denn unser Schicksal holt uns ein

    General Commentmy English translation:

    Your heart beats
    at the abyss
    The night envelops
    your last word
    So cruel
    So careless
    fate rips you
    away from me
    I let you go
    I must free myself
Then my longing overtakes me, forever yours
Forgive me – stay by me
    and I still say forget-me-not*
    I give you at parting
    a last light
    forget-me-not
    Your look sinks
    into sunset**
    I tear myself away
    with my last strength
    So cruel
    So sacred
    you lay before me
    It is accomplished
    I let you go
    I must free myself
then my longing overtakes me, forever yours
Forgive me – stay by me
    and I still say forget-me-not
    I give you at parting
    a last light
    forget-me-not
This time it will be for always
    These wounds will also heal
I tear myself away, must free myself
    then our fate overtakes us
Forgive me – stay by me…

    * this is the flower, forget-me-not
** Nachtrot is a dark “night” red, abendrot is sunset, but I think this fits better?

General Commentbah *ashamed* for some reason I was looking at these earlier today and realised I had misread something ... where it says "denn" I was thinking "dann"... so those should be better translated as "for" or "because" instead of then.

    ah, well.

General CommentOh jeez, that was one heck of a place to use the wrong word, nadjacs -- with "then" instead of "for"/"because", I actually derived a necrophilic meaning from the translation (eek! not good!). Phew, everything's safe now. :P

Anyway, the initial imagery is of some man giving his lover a merciful death (or losing her in a tragic turn of events). This is a pretty nice interpretation by itself.

However, as I re-read it with Eisbrecher's naval/militaristic theme in mind, I keep thinking of two damaged submarines. One of them is unrecoverably wrecked and the crews both know it can't get back to the surface -- so the other crew sends off off the doomed one on a final farewell, perhaps with a final flash of light (literal, or referring to a blip on the sonar).

    "Your heart beats
    at the abyss
    The night envelops
    your last word"

Heartbeat -- ping? Abyss -- the depths of the sea? Night -- the darkness of the waters in the deep? Do they lose communication channels?

Maybe I am way off, but it's fun to speculate... anyway, this is an addictive song for me. Have had it on repeat for weeks now. :)
