(oh crashing aeroplane, where were you the day she left me?)

underneath the laughs there lies a need
that nobody is getting.
and an honesty that doesn't stretch far enough
to show us all how much this will mean to us, my dear.
and when we're old we'll tell ourselves that we did
everything that we could to save this.
but now--we do nothing.

i've slept for twenty years, but i've acted strong at least
if you're leaving again, then you're leaving again
and you're gone.
and i feel nothing anymore, so just keep walking away
thirty-thousand steps,
i'll watch you for every second and never feel alone.

i've been sleeping
for at least the last two years
my dear, my princess, my sister, my lover, my friend.
i made you a bed of thorns for every rose you ever left outside my door,
that's all you ever left me.

lay your scars out in rows,
lay your scars out in rows,
lay your scars out in rows
to show me what i've done to you.

lay your scars out in rows,
lay your scars out in rows,
it was my weakness that couldn't save us.

so lay your scars out in rows,
so lay your scars out in rows,
so lay your scars out in rows for me.

we were one, and what are we now?

(act strong, at least
and don't turn around.
if i'm leaving, then i'm leaving, and i'm leaving, and i'm
gone.)

we move as one.

    - One of those relationships where nobody understands the situation except the 2 people involved. It's that addictive/destructive relationship that for some reason or another you can't quit. It's not going anywhere anymore & you know it's not, but you lie to yourselves & to each other saying that you tried & you tried but in reality, nobody did anything.

"i've slept for twenty years, but i've acted strong at least

    - One person always leaves, or forgets, or breaks your heart & just walks away. It's happened so many times that it doesn't even phase you anymore because, as sad as it is, you're just used to it. But, you know they'll be back.

    "i've been sleeping

my dear, my princess, my sister, my lover, my friend.
i made you a bed of thorns for every rose you ever left outside my door,

    - You're numb to the feelings of heartache this person has caused you. They've left you nothing but pain.

"we were one, and what are we now?
    (act strong, at least

    - You used to be a team, you used to be in love, you used to mean everything to each other then for some reason it just fell apart. Now, instead of the other person always leaving, you decide this time that YOU'RE going to be the one who will be leaving. You've had enough & you tell yourself you really mean it & you're not going to look back. You tell yourself that you're gone & you're not gonna come back.

That's what the song means to me, anyway. I've been in a 6 year relationship very similar to this that I just had to end. It was one of the hardest things I've had to do, but it was a vicious cycle that had to be done. Like they say in New Storms For Old Lovers, "I guess love's a funny thing the way it fades away without a warning."

    Man, I love this song.
