we move by instinct, darling
let our hands be hatchets, let us
wander blindly, swinging madly
in a forest made of flesh.
we move by instinct, darling
let our eyes like lepers drive
the doubters from our homes and
into the bottom of the sea.
and we speak in signals, darling
let our smoke stitch pictures, let us
twist in patterns, dull the horror
of a city still on fire. for
we are like medics handling
suicide by cyanide with bleeding
fingers. let us suffer
completely inadequate.
and we move like lovers, darling
let me run my fingers down your side
and kiss you right below the eye.
we sleep with shadows but
we never give them bread.
horror, dress yourself in shame
or i will tear a hole in you, you harlot.
burn your eyes, (i will hold your
white-washed bones unto the sky and
scream "oh god, if you are there,
i hold this body to your judgment--
give it your wrath or your mercy.
but please pick wrath.")

    My Interpretation

Aight fuckers, here's the summary. Summary: Two people, that are thinking in a dangerous frame of mind, then after they sinned, they regret, try to cope, and try put it behind them. One of them dealt with it, while the other didn't. after the second one died the first one mourned and felt hate for the sinful actions and reactions to them that the second one expressed.

Kay now bitches, we gon crack dis mother fucker. First off "we move by instinct, darling let our hands be hatchets, let us wander blindly, swinging madly in a forest made of flesh." we move by instinct, well, you fuck if I 'ant listened to enough La Dispute (Fuck this "'Spute" shit, na fam its four more letters and makes 10x the goddamn sense of fucking abbreviating La Dispute [sorry gotta rant 'bout dumb ass bitches]) to know this "something" that's happening isn't an occurrence over an extended period of time (Instinct=no time to fully think things through) meaning regret is very likely mentioned somewhere in this song.after that let our hands be hatchets" simple enough talking about destruction without second thoughts. "let us wander blindly swinging madly, in a forest made of flesh" 'prolly more about the whole "fuck shit up, who cares what we fuck up, who cares what happens after" mentality "Next "we move by instinct, darling let our eyes like lepers drive the doubters from our homes and into the bottom of the sea." Kay, so when I fist heard "lepers" I was like "hold the fuck up" I was so goddamn confused, and not because I didn't know what it meant, but because I was confused, was it in biblical context or was it the fucking person with the disease leprosy? Well for reasons we will later discover the biblical term make more sense. So let's see here "let our eyes, like lepers, drive the doubters from out homes" Aight, whatever you say Jordan, so we are alone, with high hopes and confidence, because we were unclean in the eyes of Christ?, WHAT, shhh, shhh. Ok, Jordan, what... does... this... MEAN. Next. "and we speak in signals, darling let our smoke stitch pictures let us twist in patterns, dull the horror of a city still on fire." Cool, this is a little bit more informative, first off the use of we suggests that this is more that one person by themselves and "we speak in signals" is where I'm gonna take some theory liberty and say that they know each other well, well enough to know what the other is saying without words. then, "darling let our smoke stitch pictures let us twist in patterns" saying how the time spent together made memories (pictures in smoke) now this is "their" smoke making this next line more concerning "Dull the horror of a city still on fire" Oh, shit, what comes with fire, right, smoke, whatever these people did they regret it for it had bad repercussions and now do everything to dull the pain of their regrets. Next. " for we are like medics handling suicide by cyanide with bleeding fingers. let us suffer completely inadequate" Again gonna have to take some liberty with this, but my guess is that they tried to fix the thing they regret but couldn't and now are beginning to be swallowed by their guilt/regret. Next. "and we move like lovers, darling let me run my fingers down your side and kiss you right below the eye" Odd, they were so distraught in the last verse, could they be trying to cope or put it behind them? That would be my guess. Next. "we sleep with shadows but we never give them bread" Finally the most interesting verse in the song, well back with "lepers" if that was a biblical reference for someone who sinned then this helps support that and vise Versa, what I'm talking about is that their shadows are their regrets and the bread (body of Christ?[idk, I'm not christian]) is them thinking about it and processing what they did and how they feel. Next. "horror, dress yourself in shame or I will tear a hole in you, you harlot. burn your eyes" ok so one finally gave their shadows bread and dealt with his emotions, and now is forcing the other one to do it possible to do it before they were ready, disgusted by their rejection of their own emotions. Next. "I will hold your white-washed bones unto the sky and scream "oh god, if you are there, I hold this body to your judgment-- give it your wrath or your mercy. but please pick wrath." okay, so the one still not dealing with the emotions is now different/dead for the worse and has drifted away from the other person, and now the "main character" is grieving the memories and acknowledging that they were weak and sinful, and is both sad for their splitting and hates them for what they did and how they reacted. -Jess

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
