Goodbye to sleep
I think that staying up is exactly what I need
Well take apart your head
Take apart the counting
And the flock it has bred

Goodbye to love
It's a ride that will push you up
Right against the wall

(Does everybody really need to know everyone?)
Take apart your head
(Do you really think you're really a part of it?)
Right against the wall
(And is your army really one of some thousands?)
Chew it up and swallow it
(And will you declare war on the loony bin?)

You burn bright but you run out
I fell asleep in the incline
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

Goodbye, you liar
Well, you sipped from her cup
But you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire

(When I arrive will God be waiting and pacing around his throne?)
Take apart your head
(Will he feel a little Old Testament?)
I wish I could inspire
(And will he celebrate with fire and brimstone)
Take apart the demon, in the attic, to the left
(Yeah, I admit, I am afraid of the reckoning)

(Goodbye my love)
You burnt bright but you run out
(You wait right here, and they will come and pick you up)
Let's sleep on the incline
(I've been on pause but I'm shaking off the rust)
I can't shake this tiny feeling
(I've lost my charge, I've been degaussed)

I never say anything right
(I'm on my own, I've been degaussed)
I never say anything right
(I'm on my own, I've been degaussed)
I never say anything right
(I'm on my own, I've been degaussed)
I never say anything right, right, right (I'm on my own)

Take me, take me, back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Say "I don't mind you under my skin,"
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in
But when we were made, we were set apart
Life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some Saint got the job
Of writing down my sins
The storm is coming
The storm is coming, yeah

You burnt bright but you run out
I fell asleep in the incline
I can't shake this little feeling

I never did anything right (I'm on my own)
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much, that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in
You're my favorite bird, and when you sing
I really do wish that you would wear my ring
No matter what they say, I am still the king
Now, the storm is coming
The storm is coming, yeah

    just so you guys know...

"when we were made we were set apart" is a reference to Plato's Symposium, where the mention of the Classical Soulmate Theory was born. the story is as such:

long ago, humans were actually two people combined at the spine. they had 8 limbs, and two faces on either side, both unaware of the other. zeus feared their growning power and split them in two. now every human searches the globe trying to find their other half.

it's not so werid now, is it?

    chorus:

1ST TIME: you're blowin' by but you're running, I fell asleep in the alkalide. I can't shake this little feeling, I'll never get anything right. 2ND TIME: you're blowin by but you've running, let's sleep in the alkalide. I can't shake this tiny feeling, I'll never say anything (right)/[iamonmyown...] 3RD TIME: You're blown by but you're run out, I fell asleep in an alkalide I can't shake this little feeling, I never did anything (right)/[iamonmyown...]

the vid that zelane posted above youtube.com/watch - compared to studio - only diff I hear is that on the live, Jesse sings the 3rd studio version(run out) on 2nd and 3d time(and sounds like he says 'think I'll slip into the alkalide' on the live one, which I don't hear on the studio at all.) anyways...I do think it's a) 'BLOWIN(G) BY'- makes sense if you think about it AND b) 'ALKALIDE' - "Alkalides are chemical compounds in which alkali metals are anions (that is, they bear a negative charge)" -(from wiki) - so it goes along with the degausser def- and makes sense to the song - and also what others put as alkali - I def hear the 'de' though I'm not 100% on this - I can't be - just puttin it out there - so maybe I'm wrong but thats what I think it is.

If you want a deeply analysed version here it is :D I dont care what people say, i may be looking to much into it but this fits so beautifully if it wasnt intetional, its even more amazing.

I think this song is about someone jesse knows with a mental condition (quiet probably schizophrenia or bipolar depression). And the song is about this person coming of the medication they use to control the problem, because they feel like there losing there personality, and there desperatly trying to keep a clear head and keep hold of there lover.

    So we have

Goodbye to sleep I think this staying up is exactly what i need Take apart your head Take apart the counting and the flock it has bred

He has insomnia (common in manic depressives) but hes glad because its the real him, take apart your head (the head he's been forced into) and take away the counting the order he's been force into (by authorities, family etc).

Goodbye to love It’s just a ride that will push you Up right against the wall* Take apart your head...right against the wall... Chew it up and swallow it

He has to say goodbye to his lover and this is what hes been made to think. Right against the wall (force) Chew it up and swallow (the ideals the medication)

(Does everybody really need to know everyone? Do you really think you're really a part of it? And is your army really one of some thousands? And will you declare war on the loony bin?)

This is them saying they just want to be themselves, and questioning the authroity, questioning what it will all come to, mightnt they just kill mental patients.

Pulled back but you've run out Let slip in the alkali (been asleep in the alkali) I can't shake this little feeling I'll never get anything right

(im not certain what they are but) Hes running out of there control, an alkali is a key component in anti schizophrenic drugs and he's let slip of his personality as a result of taking it, but he understands that this medication cant make him right, so he wants to just himself.

Goodbye you liar Well, you sipped from her cup But you don't own up to anything And you think you will inspire*

This is him saying goodbye to the drugged up him, he was a lie, he sipped from her cup (took the medication) but cant own up to what he is, and think that his lover will accept it.

Take apart your head...yeah, I wish I could inspire Take apart the demon up in the attic to the left*

working out who he is, he wishes he could be perfect, but cant be. He personally said demon up in the attic to the left was a tribute to rocky errikson, and it refers to mental illness, demons in his attic (the brain) to the left (the left hemisphere of the brain being the side of "evil" in tradition) he has said at several perfomances that this is a song for a cousin of his, and his demons.

Goodbye my love You wait right here, and they will come and pick you up I've been on pause But I’m shaking off the rust I’ve lost my charge I've been degaussed

This is the key to the whole thing. Hes saying goodbye to his lover, they cant be together when hes not on medication, hes saying wait right here, and the men in white will be here soon. IVE BEEN ON PAUSE BUT IM SHAKING OFF THE RUST IVE LOST MY CHARGE I HAVE BEEN DEGAUSSED hes lost his flare, his personality, himself, hes been on pause whilst under the influence, but hes taking back control. Dear god its the most insanely beautiful piece of lyrical genius ive heard since dream brother.

Take me, take me back to your bed I love you so much that it hurts my head Please say, "I don't mind you under my skin I’ll let your bad parts in. the bad parts in" When we were made we were set apart But life is a test and I get bad marks Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins The storm is coming The storm is coming in

And again, this is what hes saying to his lover, please accept the real me, say you'll accept me with my faults. WHen he was born he was made different from other people, and that means he cant be the perfect person in life. The storm is coming, he insanity, the bit that makes him alive, the bit that make him him is coming back.

Overall i think this all makes perfect sense, its the best song i have ever heard, and is a piece of musical as well as lyrical genius, the way the whole song sounds like the head of someone with issues, lots of vocals at the same time, some mourning some screaming, some saying a beautiful, simplistic perfect message to the only one for them. i love the way there a several vocal tracks at onces, some of which arnt in the offcial lyrics, its as if jesse dosnt care if people hear them, he needed them to be said.

fewww that was long, i hope atleast one person read it all and agrees with me :) let me know what you think

    Song Meaning

"Well when we were made we were set apart, But life is a test and I get bad marks" I think there's been some confusion about the 'set apart' bit... In the bible it says that christians are 'set apart' to be different than other people and not do unholy things and sin. So by this i think Jesse's saying that he's set apart to do good things and be pure and holy, but he still does stuff wrong...

Does anyone else hear "I don't mind you under my skin" instead of "I don't mind you running down my skin"?

It's definitely "You burnt bright but you're running",

and "Take apart the counting and the flock it has bred" - a reference to the previous line "Goodbye to sleep". it's referring to Counting sheep, being the traditional and well known method of falling asleep.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
