"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I think I'm running out of sympathy
For promises you've made,
But never kept
Now I'm over all the inside jokes
That capsilate the past.
They're all worn out.
I think we're running out of alcohol
Will someone make a run to get some more?
I think I'm running out of energy
To emphasize these words that you won't hear.
And I, would like to try,
Just one more time.
And I, would like to try,
Just one more time.
'Cause if I could find ways to rewind
And take back all the drunken, liquored lines
I gave to you
I think you've gotten way too big for me
You're smoking out in cars,
You're smoking out your friends
I think my tolerance for that's just him
Expect the words you can, has just run out
I think your cell phone calls mean more to you
Than I ever did, or ever would.
And I, would like to try,
Just one more time.
And I, would like to try,
Just one more time.
'Cause if I could find ways to rewind
To October of our Sophomore year
And stop where we began
I won't let you tell me stories
Smoking blunts and empty 40s
Save it for the people who would praise you for it
I won't let you tell me stories
Smoking blunts and empty 40s
Save it for the people who would praise you for it
If you're looking for substance,
I've got it all right here.
If you're looking for subtance,
I've got it all right here.
If you're looking for fuel,
To add to the raging fire,
That is your ego,
Look somewhere else...
For promises you've made,
But never kept
Now I'm over all the inside jokes
That capsilate the past.
They're all worn out.
I think we're running out of alcohol
Will someone make a run to get some more?

i think it's about a guy who got a girl into all sorts of drugs and alcohol, but then she got too into it ("I think you've gotten way too big for me You're smoking out in cars, You're smoking out your friends") and now he's trying to take back what he did when he was drunk with her, and is trying to help her get back out of that lifestyle.
