"Soldier Jane" as written by Nigel Godrich and Beck David Hansen....
No one cares what dress she wears at all
Tattered rags and paper bags and all
She's the one sleeping in the dirt
Drag her down, don't let her drown in dirt

Lovers drag their canes across the gates
Gamblers light candles for the days
No one wake her up, she's sleeping still
So put a candle on her window sill

Soldier Jane, don't be afraid
Take your heart out of the shell
Take your heart out of the shell
Throw it away

Stars, they strike the darkness in the room
Knives, they take the poison from the wound
Cars, they drive us down into the ruins
We sweep our cares away with dirty brooms

Soldier Jane, don't be afraid
Take your heart out of the shell
Take your heart out of the shell
Throw it away

General CommentI can't believe nobody has commented. Beck is a musical genius! Well... I can't guess what it's about, but he does have a tendancy to relate his feelings in metaphors.

    generally makes more sense.

My InterpretationI think it might be about a dead/dying girl. I mean who else "sleep[s] in the dirt" but dead people? It sounds to me like a girl in drying in a room. "No one wake her up she's sleeping still"- that's like something a family member or a lover would say when they know their significant other is dead. There's more to be said, but it's easier to picture it than to say it.

General CommentI think it is about a homeless woman fighting the fight that only homeless people can fight, "soldier Jane". I don't know if Beck is atheist; but I believe the "light a candle" is a catholic jab saying that the church doesn't really help it lights a candle and hopes for the best.

Nobody does it like beck, I can't help but think he is atheist.

General CommentYou have the power of the internet at your fingers, and yet... Beck is a Scientologist. It's well-known.
