Versprochen hat man uns so viel
Klar erschien so lang das Ziel
Doch die Wahrheit war viel mehr
Eine trügerische Mär

War die Sicht auch sooft getrübt
Versperrte uns den klaren Blick
Hat man dich auch sooft belogen
Und um deinen Traum betrogen

Hast du auch genug davon
Warte nicht auf das was kommt
Lass uns jetzt nach vorne schauen
Und unsere eigene Welt aufbauen

Nimm mich fest an deine Hand
Führe mich in das gelobte Land
Zeig mir deine schöne Welt
Die in mir den Tag erhellt
Nimm mich fest an deine Hand

Ich will nicht länger nur zusehen
Und am Rande des Weges stehen
Traue nicht mehr den schönen Worten
Die ich hörte an so vielen Orten

Wünsche wollen wir erhalten
Träume wollen wir gestalten
Sehnen uns nach den kleinen Siegen
Wollen nicht länger nur am Boden liegen

Auf den Strassen und in den Gassen
Sehen wir die Menschenmassen
Suchen nach dem wahren Glück
Streben nach einem kleinen Stück

    Promised land

One has promised us so much The destination seemed so clear for so long But the truth was much more A deceptive story

Was the sight also so often clouded It obstructed our clear view One has also so often lied to you And betrayed your dream

Have you also enough of it Don't wait for what comes Let us now look ahead And create our own world

Take me firmly in your hand Lead me into the promised land Show me your beautiful world That lights the day in me Take me firmly in your hand

I don't want to just watch any longer And stand at the edge of the path I don't trust the pretty words anymore That I heard in so many places

We will achieve wishes We will shape dreams We yearn for the small victories We no longer want to lie on the ground

On the streets and in the lanes We see the crowds Searching for true happiness Striving for a small piece

The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
