Okay Shut up
The dead guy's got the floor
I might just get emotional so bear with me
Okay shut up we both know the rules
This is a 50 yard death grip dash for fools
And anyone else convinced
Of the divinity of their pee pee

I forgot to scowl in the portrait
That they hung in the lobby by the casket
I forgot the fingering for the barre chords in drop D
I forgot that tattoos don't come off until you're worm's meat
Can't identify me
Hey

What the hell will it say upon my grave?
Here lies that son of a bitch not rich or famous
Ignoramus
Hey
No black graffiti says,
"I live" "am God" or "Save"
You can be sure there'll be no flowers or eternal flame
R.I.P. you no name

No bitmapped reproduction
Spawns my digital progeny
No photographic record to extend me (avenge me!)

I couldashouldawoulda been a star
But the car at the stop light veered to the right
Just slightly east not west
So I guess that's what made me epileptically shake
And miss (spit up at) the audition

I forgot to wear a black t-shirt
To the world so they told me I was different
I took out my earrings for an x-ray of my skull
The holes filled in so quickly
Forming tiny little scabs get the hydrogen peroxide

Chorus

So long...So long
No one will miss me when I'm gone
My gravesite will be blank and unmarked
And underground alone in the dark
I'll probably be a little pissed that
The world just keeps on spinning like I never existed!

Chorus

You can be sure there'll be no flowers
or a name upon the stone
All it'll say is "Here lies some dead guy who lived his life alone;
always afraid to say what might be ugly or unpopular"
Now he's left nothing her on earth
But ashes and a subatomic speck or dirt

This song has amazing lyrics, but I need clarification on this one line..."I forgot the fingering for the barre chords in drop D" It clearly says that on the CD jacket and in lyric sites. However...I hear something along the lines of "I erased my fingernails with (something) and gasoline" Is that just me?

Hello damus. I got bored and I'm trying to procrastinate even more by doing this. You can easily guess who I am by the username probably. On topic. I think he says "I erase my fingernails with lye and gasoline."

yeah so i think it's basically just about some guy who thinks he hasn't done enough in his life and doesn't mean enough to the world/people...

and then there's a few stabs at stereotypes, in reference to tattoos and black t-shirts and the such.

and yeah i think they definitely talk about fingernails not barre chords in drop D right.

Ok, I have no clue what the first verse means, but I think the song as a whole could be about the insignificance of a person. This person in this song obviously thinks he's only contributing to society if he makes a name for himself, hence, "No Name." To achieve that, he's trying to become a rockstar, or to fit into a stereotype, but he dies in the end...

So...the last verse is something like how one should just try to live being themselves, yknow, instead of focusing on fitting into a stereotype and shit, so they'd die knowing they mean something to someone and themselves.

I hope that made sense :)

Yes, the line is "I erased my fingernails with lye and gasoline" The jacket in their CD has incorrect lyrics for that line.

I love The Smashup, too bad they're still relatively unknown.. I saw them live at Warped Tour in 2007. At the end of their show the drummer threw one of his sticks into the crow and I caught it, and met them afterwards & got it signed. They're pretty cool guys too.

This song is one of my favorites, & I basically share the same views on the song as Some_3517.

Love this song - esp the end "Now he's left nothing here on earth, But ashes and a subatomic speck or dirt"

So nice to have a song where a million other ppl haven't added their stuff so it's not like I'm re-hashing what been said over and over again.

Anyway the last part of the song is what I relate to best - not being good enough for anyone to remember you:

So long...So long - Oh well

No one will miss me when I'm gone - as it says, no one gives a fuck

My gravesite will be blank and unmarked - no one knows who you are, so there's nothing to be put on your gravestone. I think this also goes WAAAAY back to when the witches and murderers and whatnot used to have unmarked graves as no one wants to know who they are

And underground alone in the dark - no other graves close by, so very seperate from everyone else\

I'll probably be a little pissed that The world just keeps on spinning like I never existed! - Well it happens. Earth don't give a shit about us :-P

    Chorus

You can be sure there'll be no flowers - No one who cares enough to vist the grave

or a name upon the stone - No one to remember me

All it'll say is "Here lies some dead guy who lived his life alone; always afraid to say what might be ugly or unpopular" - Kinda like me: I'll do anything to avoid conflict and getting in ppl's hair

Now he's left nothing here on earth But ashes and a subatomic speck or dirt - Well, that's what we all become, but in this case, there's absolutely NOTHING left behind, no family, no friends, just the shit we all become in the end.

That probly doesn't help much, but that's my interpretation of the song:)

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
